Anyone have a bass thats flat black? (Not Shiny)

Anyway, I think flat (satin) black and maple is killer!

This is the body of the Schecter Damien-5; the finish is called "Satin Black" -- I think it looks good.

this is my 2nd flat black bass, the finish rubs to gloss where your fingers touch it a lot, happens within weeks, depending on how much, or hard you'll play it.

The reason your luthier is trying to talk you out of it is because is much more difficult to do than a shiny finish. There's three ways I know of of doing it. The Andreas and the MM Subs use a slightly textured black coating. The Manne is made of a wood with very little grain definition and then been stained black - if you catch the light just right you can just see the grain. The Gus is done with a spray-on matt black. This way gives for me the best finish because it's completely smooth and matt black. However it's very difficult to do because any spraying imperfections can't be polished out as they go glossy so it relies on the sprayer being able to put down a perfect coat of colour. Also with time and playing areas will polish up to a semi-gloss.

Good luck with your project and if you still decide you want matt black stick with it!

Not true at all.. You spray just like any other finish, wetsand it smooth just like any other finish,then instead of buffing and polishing you simply rub it down with some steel wool to take it right back to the smoothest matte black finish you can find..

done it a few times and its glass smooth and matte finish.

Not all of them. It used to be a purple/pink/champagne color that was really worn. Also I didn't pay alot for it. I would never have painted a nice burst Pedulla. I still have GAS for a blueburst Buzz.
