Anyone here ever go on a fast?

I was assured by several doctors (my personal Dr. and a nutritionist he referred me to) that fasting is perfectly healthy.

so long as you take a multivitamin (as you should every day) you won't be malnourished at all from a 24-48 hour fast.

what you will have is some hunger pains and your metabolism will slow (which is bad if you want to lose weight). when you come off of the fast your body is going to want to store all energy you put into it as fat. not feasting and eating healthy when coming off of your fast is the most important thing to do (health-wise).

of course you should consult YOUR Dr. as everyone's body is differant and you may have specific health problems which prevent fasting from being healthy for you.

now your reasons for fasting are wrong but I think if you do it you will have an overall positive experience.
Slows your metabolism.

Screws with your hormones.

DON'T FAST.

Advice; Dont Ride Your Bike! I fasted when I was 17 (don't ask why :rollno: ) ended up crashing into a car with my bike, it got all bent, I got a bump on the head, the guy jumped out and asked "what's up!" I said "whoa! I must of fallen asleep or something!" He said "man watch out or you're gonna kill yourself". The body needs energy. Fact is; I read dick Gregory's book on fasting and thought "hmmm...could be cool" guess that was a laughable attempt at fasting:D lasted a week though.

ditto...it wasn't that bad when i was younger for some reason...but ever since i started eating properly (eating breakfast and more times a day) it is soo hard....by iftaar time i'm going crazy...and taking tests at that time pretty much means i fail :p

i don't really know about fasting for more than one day...i had friends who did the 30-hour famine thing..they just dove right into it..takes a lot of willpower

haha ramadhan this year is in the summer, so it will be really hard this year.

I'm doing good. It was only from Monday night to Tuesday night.

Are you still going or something? :eyebrow:
I didn't want to mention it while it was happenning, but I never even started!

I sat at my computer Monday evening while eating a bowl of cereal looking through my posts when I saw this one and thought "Oh, fiddlesticks".

Damn my weakness for tasty treats! :D

Thanks, though.

fasting for me is spiritual and can be a very enlightening event.

+ 1

My church (I'm LDS) encourages all its healthy members to fast. It's a very routine, institutionalized thing. Every month on the first Sunday, we go for 24 hours without food or drink. We then donate the sum of what we would have spent for food and drink to a special fund that's used for assistance to the poor and disadvantaged among us. It's called a "fast offering".

I've been doing it for 28 years, so I'm very accustomed to it by now. The body adjusts. I've experienced no adverse consequences from doing it, and suppose that it's actually been quite physiologically and spiritual beneficial.

In Ramadhan us muslims fast from when the sun goes down till when it rises, so i guess its like from 4 AM to 6:00PM. We do that because it makes us think about how poor and homeless people feel when they dont have any food, and it makes us think about how blessed we are to have food and shelter. Not fasting in Ramadhan for us is a sin if you are able to do it, so its okay to not do it if you're sick or you have a good excuse or something. It also encourages us on giving out food to other people who are less fortunate and donating money.
Its a time where families get together and everything.

We do it for like 30 days and then "Eid" comes, which is our equivilant of Christmas where we get lots of gifts and moneh from our relatives and the people we know. Oh and btw, we have Eid twice a year, so its like having Christmas twice a year, haha yeah baby ;).

funny where's your doctorate from?

I trust Dr.s not random guys from a forum
It's the new millenium's PhD program. Anyone that's read a book about dieting, taken a health class or even talked to a thin guy is an expert.

There are people out there that actually know what they're talking about, but they went to school for it. I'd ask a dietician (this would be a person with a college degree in the field) before I listened to anything posted on this forum concerning nutritional issues.
