anyone here straight edge?

I am by definition, but its NOT a label I attach to myself. I dont go for silly labels. I enjoy clean living thats all.

Vegan>no drugs>no alcohol>no tobacco>no coffee (tea yes)

I'm also a pacifist, enviro freak, and to some degree Buddhist. Okay too much information people!

Well, having just done a google search for Straight Edge and learning a little bit about it, all I can say is this:

You've got to be kidding, right?

I've never done drugs or drunk to excess. I was never promiscuous. I listened to punk rock. I didn't start smoking until I was 22...

Does this mean I was "Straight Edge" when I was a teenager?

No, because I didn't need to be part of some clique or trend to support my decision not to be a burn out. I just lived my life and, by the way, hung out with a lot of burn outs (I am a musician, after all). I didn't influence them and they didn't influence me. And, our unspoken agreement to live and let live served better than any ridiculous proselytizing on my part would have done.

Why do kids seem so freakin' interested in labeling themselves these days? Mayhem is cutting himself in the name of "death metal" and this kid wants the world to know that he's not having any fun, because he's "sXe." Is it so important to be part of a sub-culture that we need to create a sub-culture of good kids?

This is all BS and just incredibly ridiculous. Being "Straight Edge" sounds like joining a twelve-step program for people without problems. In other words, what's the point?

Now, excuse while I light up a butt... (I really am, by the way!)

I like to smoke, drink, I used my share of drugs (although no more nowadays). I'm not half about to give up sex either and I'm not one to give lessons.
I never really understood the movement. It always looked to me like a poor excuse for dorm dorks to not have a girlfriend.
I share none of the principles or ideals behind it either.

I don't do any drugs except for tea and sugar occasionally and i'm a vegetarian.

Does that make me a straight-edge? I read somewhere that you need to be active making decisions in the straigt-edge community or some ****..

I'm also a complete drug-liberal, i wanna legalize all drugs.

Not trying to bring a fight.. but VeganBass, why can't you drink coffee but you can drink tea?

Oh, I'm not straight edge. I've done plenty of drugs in the past, and I used to be well into magic mushrooms.

I'm done with that stuff now though. Haven't drank for five months, haven't smoked weed for six months, given that stuff up just because... to be frank, it gets boring.

I used to smoke weed every single day for two years though.

I read through your previous posts and from your descriptions, I think know the sort of people you hung out with. They were the kind of people at my school who made a big deal of, and constantly advertised, the fact that they drink and party and do all the things the "straight edge" people didn't do.

No, I'm afraid you are completely wrong. The ones who "bigged up" their partying lifestyle of hedonistic excess were all mouth. Just people trying to look cool, as if others were supposed to be impressed.

Yes, I was friends with a few rogues in my time, but they got to be where they were by keeping quiet about their exploits, not advertising them.

Again, I'm sorry but you obviously don't know the kind of people I hang out with.

I use to be strait edge, but I never had a reason. I didn't do it because a crowd was doing it. I didn't beat up/stop hanging out with drinkers/smokers. In fact, all throughout high school, everyone assumed I was **** faced every weekend because I hung with that crowd. I was sober at these parties.

But now.... wow, yeah.

How long will I live?

I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing "fairly well" for my age.
A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I will live to be 80?"

He asked, "Do you smoke tobacco or drink beer or wine?"
"Oh no," I replied. "I don't do drugs, either."

Then he asked, "Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?"
I said, "No, my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!"

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?"
"No, absolutely not, the sun is really bad!" I said.

He asked, "Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?"
I said, Oh, heavens no!"

He looked at me and said, "Then, why do you give a sh*t?"

I know this is NOT representative of the true straight edge movement, but I saw about 5 or so guys literally pummel one drunk guy having a good time at a party. He didn't do anything to them, he was actually in the other side of the room, just drinking a brew, and chatting with people (drunkenly, but conservatively) The guys looked like they were getting ready to leave, when they pounced on him.

everyone was completely shocked. Thinking fast, I threw a coke can at one of them while the "fight" was happening, and yelled that I called the cops. They of course heard that and left rather quickly. That looked more like skinheads with a problem rather than people who abstain from a gratuitous lifestyle to me. I've been turned off to sXe ever since.

I don't do drugs, drink, or have sex. I enjoy an occasional cigar (my last one was at least four months ago). I love hardcore and I play in a hardcore band. I will never claim edge, though. I am a Christian, and I don't see a purpose in claiming another religion to explain why I actually practice my own.

On a related note, does anyone else get a little annoyed by sXe kids wearing belts and hoodies and such that say "drug free" on them? I don't see the point in advertising the fact that you're obeying the law. I don't molest little kids, but I don't see a need to wear a hoodie with "pedophelia free" on the chest.

With that said, I have a lot of friends who claim edge, and they're all pretty cool. I have nothing against straight edge.

yes, the cops arrived about 35 min. later (boo) and I gave them a description of what happened, they asked a couple people if they knew them, and then they left. They really downplayed the whole event.
(the punching-bag left the incident with 2 black eyes, a couple cracked ribs and a newfound prejudice)

man if some dude with a bad haircut tried to beat me up for smoking or drinking i would totally beat HIM up..:ninja:

I'm not going to divulge any further information, because I don't know any, but I had a friend who beat the **** out of a dealer with a bat!! Just because he was dealing. THAT is the straight edge I hate. If you don't drink/smoke because you want to stay clean, awesome... but you don't know what you're missing. :D
