Perhaps you're friends were different, but the description I gave was perfectly true of the people I went to school with, and the people I see daily all over the place. They are truly annoying.

People need to feel accepted and they need to feel like they have an identity - something that defines them and distinguishes them. During adolescence these feelings are heightened. It's normal to associate with others who share similar ideals in the search for acceptance and identity. Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it "BS".

Don't assume he doesn't understand it - I'm sure he understands it perfectly, he just thinks it's a load of guff.

I do have an identity...I'm me. What more do I need? IM(H)O, being straight-edge, emo, goth, religious, <insert social grouping here> is something for weak minded people who need others to feel validated.

Being a certain way because it suits you is fine, but labelling yourself as something to be accepted is just sad.

well, its more people referring to themselves as "straight edge", so i'm not quite sure if your point is relevant.

but i remember in high school, a few straight edge kids and totally giving them props for sticking to it and being committed in as crazy as an environment as high school itself.

its funny to me, how some people dont get a "disciplined" attitude.
