I used to claim edge, but have since shed the label and indulged. Looking back, it was nothing more than a silly label; something to call yourself just because you don't want to drink or smoke. Bane says it bests in their song "Wasted On The Youth." As kids we were all too quick to call ourselves something, and I think that's just a normal adolescent quality. At that age, we're all looking for something to identify with. That's why you have high school groups: the preps, the jocks, the punks, the geeks. Sadly, this has lead to a lot of exploitation. I won't even get started on the blasphemous mislabeling of emo and punk for marketability.

Straight Edge is by Minor Threat, btw.

The day that I base my life philosophy on one song by some measley punk band trying to make money will be the most shameful day of my life.

Fugazi, on the other hand, are pretty cool and Joe Lally is an excellent bassist IMO.

Ian McKaye never set out to start a movement, just wanted to go against the grain of the time of the DC scene, where doing hard drugs was all the rage. IIRC, McKaye has disassociated himself with the movement (and also drinks, from what I've been told).



I'm not edge.

You get the idea of my post. sXe is just another way of fitting in with like-minded individuals... while we go to concerts and join clubs and have drinking parties...

I'll agree that I don't like the idea of edge guys pushing their beliefs onto other (or extremists beating up non-edge dudes), but I definitely find nothing wrong with advertising what you're a part of.

To me, it's like wearing a band t-shirt.

I claimed edge in grade 9 or so and did it for a couple years after a bit of drinking and watching my friends get into drugs and other crap I didn't want polluting my young mind. I've since chilled out a bit, I indulge in everything from time to time. But I still know what those things can do to you...

But let's face it... posers are lame in any category.

Dude, we're all in it for the money. Money is what feeds you, clothes you, and puts a roof over your head. Anybody who says they're not "in it for the money" is either a liar or insane.

Mackaye wrote a 45-second song about someone who died. He didn't want to start a movement. But, when the movement started, he wasn't above making money off of it. Then, when the movement got out of hand, he disavowed it and claimed he never meant to start it in the first place.

Geez! With moves like that, maybe he should become a politician! ;) :p :D

I did not say that...I don't know them personally or the band very well, but considering that they were semi-successful, I assume that playing in the band eventually became their jobs, which would entail that they wrote songs in order to make money, even if they didn't write songs ONLY in order to make money.
Don't put words in my mouth (fingers???).

I do think it's interesting how we parse the word "drug/s." When I think of drugs, I think of any chemical substance such as a narcotic, hallucinogen, stimulant, depressant, etc. that affects the central nervous system. This includes, but is not limited to: cannabis, opiates, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, barbiturates etc.

Also, I believe that prescribed drugs are still drugs. They are just socially accepted, and are heavily monitored. They all do the same things, we're just told that "some are good, and some are bad." Arbitrary when it comes down to it.
