Anyone installed the new Aguilar DCB soapbars yet?

I thought they were supposed to be hitting suppliers in April? I found a thread in which a member was ordering them, and found a couple of new models of basses from Spector and Mayenes (sp?) that were using them. Thought someone might have wrung them out by now. Crap.

I just watched my ripped version of that clip ... it starts with the rear pickup and then cuts into the guy talking before he switched. I was wondering why I didn't see the other positions. Weird.

Anybody installed & used a set of the new Aguilar DCB ceramic soapbar pickups yet? How do they sound? How do they compare with comparable models from other well-known vendors, i.e. Nordstrands, Delanos, EMGs, Bartolinis, SGDs? :hmm:

I saw Janek Gwizdala play his new Fodera with the DCBs in it last night at Bass San Diego. He was playing it through a TH500 and a couple 112 cabs. It sounded amazing. Dave Boonshoft was there, too, and he explained how they wind the pickups (on bars, not poles) to maintain consistent tone across all the strings and all the way up and down the fretboard - and they do that. Great sounding pickups.

I'm enjoying them. They are a very aggressive type tone, but rounded enough to still be very useable. I have them in passive and is configured Volume, Blend, Tone, Tone.

I installed them in an Ibanez SR-705 - amazing pickups! A couple of description/thoughts about them here.

But yes, they compare very favorably to pickups such as Nordstrand, Bartolini, etc.

Hey guys,

I've been looking at the DCB's as well for my Spector5. Thing is, it is loaded with EMG40dc which IMO have too much of a Ping Ping Zing Zing Music Man tone.

I'm looking for a more organic sound.

I'm ok with an agressive tone, but not overpowering in the uppermid cut.

Right now I'm in between Duncans SSB5 and Ag's DCB.

Any clue?

Hi Scarve,

You could try EMG 40CS pickups which have a more organic and warm humbucker tone. The "DC" models are quite bright and zingy, and were probably meant to approximate a MusicMan tone, but they work best in the same position as the MusicMan pickups. Consider using two 40CS pickups, or a 40CS in the bridge position and a 40P5 in the neck position.

I have limited experience with the Duncan SSB5 pickups, but what I have tried sounds good, a bit lower in output level but modestly warm and organic. The Aguilar DCB pickups are brighter and higher output, but not quite as aggressive and zingy as the EMG 40DC pickups.

Thanks for the reply, appreciated.

I'd try other EMG's if I was still in the active camp, but I use a lot of germanium fuzzes which sound awful with active, low impedance pickups.

So, no actives for me. Going passive is a must.
