anyone know anything about processors or compressors?

i need to get one, but i know nothing about them. i'm playing with a band now that is of course very loud, and i am playing chords on bass that i would like to come out clearly when i turn up and not bottom out.

my setup is:
GK 800rb
ampeg 4x10 & 1x18
fender deluxe jazz bass

also, i would like to know the actual difference between a processor and compressor. if you have any suggestions on which would be the best to use, please list them. anything under $300 would be right for my price range.
thanks!

Processors, enhance sound by adding or taking away tone, where a compressor limits or compresses your signal, it helps smooth out uneven playing/singing.

Some companies make a compressor/processor all as one unit.

Here's an article called "All About Compressors", the link is below.

Hope that helps you out some.
