Anyone Tried the Paleo Diet?

I'm not going to go into great detail about this since I'm pretty sure it would be a waste of time.:smug::woot: I'll just say that I've done a metric shag ton of reading on the subject and the reading is out there for the taking if anyone is interested in improving their health through eating a better diet. Knowledge is power!!! lol.

Extreme morbid obesity was almost unheard of until about 40 years ago, now it's an epidemic. How is that evolving? What has happened is there has been a metric ton of bad nutritional advice handed down from the authorities, people believed it and gave into it and VIOLA!* We suddenly have epidemics of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and this new thing called alzheimer's disease. All caused by nutritional advice presented to us from the authorities over the course of the last 40 or so years.

*I like violas and viola players, so this is intentional.

40 years ago, people didn't spend their whole day in a cubicle in front of a computer. I have a feeling people sitting on their asses 24/7 and stuffing their faces with massive amounts is more of a problem. People need to get off their asses and know when to stop.

I wish more people would learn to say "metric shag ton" of something in their replies, just makes for better reading.

One thing that a lot of people think is gonna save them is getting up off their ass and exercising. I will tell you guys right now that exercising a shag ton or even a gol dern giant metric shag ton of exercising w/o eating properly will more likely kill you than improve your health situation. Eat right, then exercise a little and you will be golden. Exercise a shag ton and eat poopie and you are going to seriously wind up in a hospital or worse.

Which thing would be better to do?

1. Eat a 8 oz steak with vegetables, wait a couple of hours, then run a mile and then hit a punching bag for 15 minutes.

2. Eat a bagel and cereal for breakfast along with 12 oz of orange juice and an apple. Run 8 miles to burn off the sugar, collapse in a heap then eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to refuel?

Not saying it's ok to live on a diet of McD's as long as you exersice. Just a normal, varied, balanced diet and MOVE YOUR ASS, and you should be fine. No need for all this "I wrote a book on eating pinecones and mud, and I'm 84 years old and have the body of a 20 year old so listen to my advice". I don't buy it.

Who said to eat a pine cone? Go ahead and build up strawmen and knock them down, I'm cool with that if you are.

What the problem is a lot of the time is people think they are eating a normal diet, and even with exercise they still get fat, so they give up on the exercise part and get fatter still.

If anyone is doing even moderate exercise and is not losing weight but would like to, the key would be to adjust the diet wouldn't it? Like I keep saying, you don't need to exercise your butt off to lose weight, sometimes sure it might be fun to get into stellar shape for some sport or to just look fantastic. Normal exercise and adjust the diet is key, in a nutshell for me this is the end of the story concerning weight loss.

I think we may not be so far off on agreeing on what people should be doing as I first thought, but we still might be disagreeing a bit here.

Yeah, I don't think we're that far off either. Not sure how it is over there, but over here we are constantly bombarded with diets telling us "meat is bad, potatoes are bad, bread is bad, milk is bad, pasta is bad, grains are bad, any dairy products are bad, fruit is bad, etc, etc..." You know, whatever. In my mind, you'll be fine if you lay off processed food and industrial crap (people actually buy pancake-mix! How hard is it to mix some yourself? Am I right?), and stop shoving huge amounts of sugar down your throat.

And honestly, not trying to create strawmen here, I just enjoy going over the top to make a point. Sorry about that.

Not to pick or anything, but this is what people have said about every other diet.

No, we have more obesity because our standard of living is up compared to before, and people are eating too much and exercising too little (and STILL our life expectancy has gone up). We can eat all the bronto burgers we want, but we still can't eat too much or fail to get off the couch.

Go back to the great apes and the diet was largely based on fruit and vegetables, with correspondingly large guts and smaller brain sizes. Chimpanzees supplement with some meat. The revolution in evolution in humans was the ability to better exploit high-fat and high-carbohydrate foods allowing a bigger brain and a smaller gut. Debate over timing rages but some suggest external digestion (i.e. cooking) was a factor about 1 million years ago. But even then obtaining high fat foods (from hunting) or high carbohydrate foods (from fruit or roots) took time and was variable so we are disposed to maximise our intake whilst conserving energy. It made sense 100,000 years ago, but now it's easy to get these.

One of the things that changed 40 or so years is that the cost of food relative to incomes began to come down quite a bit so food was more available, but mostly of the processed variety, relatively more rich in carbohydrates. People were eating food rather at variance with official recommendations which haven't changed very much, on the whole, since WW2. Coupled with a reduction in physical activity it leads to obesity. People were pretty healthy in those parts of the world not occupied by fighting forces as they had to exercise to get places and the total intake was limited, and generally fairly balanced.

I read that something like a cookie a day over and above your carbohydrate requirements will lead to someone of a healthy weight becoming overweight or tending to obesity (I can't remember the exact gain) within a decade. So if you are packing away that extra cookie as a snack from aged 18 then by 40 it would be pretty easy to be obese. And the most basic part of your brain will be telling you to do that, and will give you a little seritonin boost as a reward. Getting the same level of reward delivered to the lizard brain takes a fair distance run to get the required endorphin boost.

Alzheimer's was named over 100 years ago, so it's not exactly new. What is new is people not dying of infectious diseases or other causes and getting to suffer from it in such large numbers.
