Anyone use 18's?

I have a Sunn cab that is a 12 + 18. Also has built in crossover option.
Use to bi-amp with a Marshall 4x12 for the highs.
I don't play big enough gigs to use this combo anymore.

Sometimes run it out in the garage with a GK 1001/210 combo. heh heh

Used to use a folded Sunn 18 in conjunction with an 200s head.

No, I don't know who puts out a good 18 cab these days.

I use an 18" speaker in my 1966 Ampeg B-18N. Amazing! The B-18N has double the power of a B-15N and the all tube format really works with the 18" speaker in a "sealed" cabinet. Pure tone heaven...unless you wanna slap and then it isn't spectacular but still doable. I only use my B-18N for studio work, home practice, and church gigs.

I have a Dayton 18 in a homebuilt box I throw in the rig sometimes at outdoor gigs/parties. Although on paper it shouldn't be nearly as loud as the other cabs it does add needed lowend or "push" when playing outdoors where the bass seems to kinda fly away. It really could use a 250hz lowpass filter though, quite beamy on it's own, that's in the works.

Last year I got a Carvin 1x18 cab. I biamp it with a 4x10. It really makes the lowest notes of my 5-string jump out. Gotta admit I love that! Those notes were kinda wimpy with my 15s. Also, it's not too heavy. Love that too.

I used my Trace 1818 as a sub until I got a Bergantino NV215. According to my drummer (who's in the line of fire when we rehearse) I lost a little of the super-deep gut-churning low end but gained punch and definition... which is what I was hoping for.

It seems like most "name-brand" 18 cabs are in much too small a box to do what an 18 can do. Mine's in 5.5 cu.ft. only because I had that box built for a project that was summarily scrapped and stumbled across the 18 for nothing. That's about the smallest box it could be in and still claim an honest f3 of 38-40hz according to WinISD. Still not high SPL but a decent xmax of about 6mm, 18 inches of cone surface and it do put the bottom in the bass.:D

I've got a Road 1-18 sitting next to me as I write this. Been told that the walls literally moved when I use to crank it in small to med. size clubs. Weighs a ton. Rode it down into the basement when we moved here in 1995 and it may never leave. Would take a crane to get it up the stairs. Bud

I used an Eden 1x18 up until recently, and loved it. It is very fast and tight for an 18" IMO, and it sounded wonderful both in a stack with a 4x10 and paired with an Ashdown ABM 2x10 combo.

However, I got sick of hauling all that gear and replaced it with a Schroeder 610L. Which sounds better, louder and is a little bit less weight than my old Ashdown 4x10. :D

I play with a few cabs (1x18, 1x15, 4x10) and I've really learned to love my 18 inch cab. I've got an old ampeg 18inch that i've had for years and bought for 100 bucks.

Now i'm looking for something a little better and was wondering what was a good 18inch cab out there.

Thanks!

Yes, I use 18s. Two of 'em. And I didn't buy 'em, nor do I have to store/lug 'em around. How?

I have a DI on the front of my preamp and it goes to the PA.

:hiding:

;)

I play through a 1974 4ohm CV 18" folded horn cab (that I got for free from a fellow TB'er), super heavy but worth every ounce in tone with suprisingly articulate mids and highs. It's a beast, but sounds fantastic paired with my SWR 4004 head. Not a great cab for smaller venues, but fantastic for larger halls and outdoor gigs. Tons of low end, super fat sound.
