I plan on removing the pickup cover when I get it as well, from what I hear, they're a bloody hassel.
Be prepared - your guitar player will fear you.
Here, in a nutshell, are some of the things (defects that Rickenbacker is well-known for) youll want to look for:
- Inconsistent quality
- Multiple dead spots on the fretboard
- Poorly cut nut
- Nut and truss rod cover that extends beyond the neck
- Crooked truss rod cover
- Poor bridge - it bends, it's not always able to advance down far enough to get the action right
- Excessive neck bow - maxed out truss rods
- The Midnight Blue bleeding issue
- Poor finish quality
- Inferior quality wood - truss rod ends dig into the soft wood which creates adjustment - problems - they max out in no time
- Defective electronics
- Weak pickups
- Flimsy case that's prone to crack easily
- Flimsy box they use for shipping
- A defunct customer service
I suppose I expect the same level of quality from Rickenbacker as I have received from Fender. I dont think thats asking for too much.
The fact that most people don't understand Rics is usually the cause of their frustration. It's a different animal.
people here on Talkbass (who are for the most part, very knowledgeable)
Any websites you can send me to for converting a four-string into a five-string? I would LOVE to own a five-string Midnight Blue Rickenbacker, it would be quite a beast.
I wouldn't go that far. This is a place of information exchange... there is a lot of good information, and a lot of bad information.
I like Rickenbacker basses. I like the way they play and their tone. I’ve discovered that Rickenbacker’s quality, however, is inconsistent. Meaning they manufacture and sell defective products. Getting a good one is a crap-shoot. I don’t like gambling, especially when the odds aren’t in my favor.
I see someone (post #3) has already posted links to several threads that detail Rickenbacker’s ongoing quality issues. Take a look. Talkbass is a great resource. Unlike the Rickenbacker Resource Forum, Talkbass allows folks to post the issues they’ve had, seen, or heard of. It’s nice because nothing gets swept under the rug. You get full and honest disclosure on this forum. That’s incredibly valuable.
I suggest you carefully examine your instrument and look for the problems that are detailed in the threads a fellow TB’er (post #3) was kind enough to post for you. If you’re fortunate to get a good one I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I hope you do get a good one the first time around. Many of us weren’t as fortunate. Also, some of us ended up compromising. Meaning we eventually ended up keeping the bass even though it had multiple issues. My Rickenbacker is the only bass I’ve compromised on. My Fenders are as perfect as one might expect.

Here, in a nutshell, are some of the things (defects that Rickenbacker is well-known for) Well known for......seriously? Just because you've found at least one incident it is a common defect? Only because you post it repeatedly in every thread you can think of. you’ll want to look for:
- Inconsistent quality Your definition
- Multiple dead spots on the fretboard I don't hear this complaint often......can be due to setup. In all the Rics I've owned I've never had this issue
- Poorly cut nut Again not a problem I've heard of on a regular basis. "poorly cut" is subjective and an issue dealt with during setup
- Nut and truss rod cover that extends beyond the neck Only complaint I've heard of is from you and from the pics you are right in your case.
- Crooked truss rod cover Rare
- Poor bridge - it bends, it's not always able to advance down far enough to get the action right Completely agree
- Excessive neck bow - maxed out truss rods Rare
- The Midnight Blue bleeding issue Agreed, poorly handles by Ric. No longer an issue however
- Poor finish quality I'm sure it happens but Ric consistently gets positive reviews for their finishes
- Inferior quality wood - truss rod ends dig into the soft wood which creates adjustment - problems - they max out in no time This was acknowledged by Ric as a wood supplier issue and corrected. Not good certainly.
- Defective electronics As a rule or common that's just a lie.
- Weak pickups Rediculous.
- Flimsy case that's prone to crack easily Yes, absolutely
- Flimsy box they use for shipping It's a shipping box. Stupid to mention and why you lose credibility
- A defunct customer service They were beyond great in my two dealings with them but I have heard multiple complaints recently. it's possible Ric's customer service has declined recently OR it is possible that some customers are unreasonable and ignorant then post on web forums about how Ric mistreated them. Who knows?
Wow, with an axe to grind and love of exaggeration......
You certainly have some valid criticisms but are reaching quite a bit to push whatever negative agenda you have as well.
Quality in workmanship should be the main criteria in any musical instrument, shouldn't it?
