Anything About a Rickenbacker 4003?

OK... let's try these phrases for the semantics police:

"The drummer and bass player were perfectly in sync!"

"He threw a perfect touchdown pass!"

"The lake was perfectly flat!"

All inaccurate' yet acceptable.

Now, let's try this - "I set the relief on Ric perfectly flat". Uh oh... for some reason unacceptable. Strange.

I agree with you. It's all the flawed perceptions and nitpicking that bothers me. I own more Fenders than Rics. Heck, I own more Gibsons than Rics. If people started bashing either of them like they do Rics around here, I'd be calling them out too. Face it, Ric bashing is a blood sport around here, I'm just expressing my opinion with everybody else.

Its rather hilarious when people state the MF MID sale was seconds or in some way used basses. Nope not at all , it was a accurate representation of RIC made basses between mid 2010 to mid 2011.

Obviously John Hall was sleeping because alot of dogs got out. If i were him id be rather embarrassed because the one i sent back out of the box was beat by a CV and VM squier out of the box.

IMO RIC could make a better product overseas , like korea for half the price. Some people will say thats putting american workers out of a job, well its a job that some are obviously unfit to do.


Gibson gets bashed more then RIC around here and the 4 gibson t birds i owned had no issues like my RIC i sent back , i have a gibson les paul money bass and some studios and i have never noticed flaws on them.


Why people like fenders is beyond me , i have owned alot , nothing special.

You got it Mitch. Maybe, just maybe, someone, someday, will invent a device that will allow for the measurement of "flat", so that it is no longer the imprecise definition like we have today. Until then, please continue to refer to your Ric action as perfectly flat.....since there's no way to tell for sure.

I think for good reason. I can't think of another manufacturer that produces $2000+ basses that has these issues repeatedly. (I don't include Fender/Ibanez in there since most of their basses are half that or less) I can see getting some things wrong with a cheap bass, but for what they're asking price-wise and the quality control? I'd be embarrassed to run a bass company like that.

Umm... Most of these people spent $1k on their 4003s. You can buy one, in any finish available, from a reputable Ric dealer for around $1500 online.

Fender, Gibson, etc. have ALL experienced issues. Ric isn't perfect (uh oh, there's that word again) but people hold them up to a fantastically higher standard than the others. Not sure why exactly.

Nope. All of those brands have their detractors, and their are plenty of threads dedicated to "hate" for those brands. The guys from the Ric boards feel like they are singled out here, but that is, of course, far from the truth.

Edited to add: The fact that some of us got a good deal on the bass does not make the QC issues discovered acceptable.

Oh please. That's simply not true. I tend to click on Ric related threads, so I see most of them. While it's gotten better lately, I'd estimate 95% (not a scientific poll, so don't get all semantic-y on me) end up with some foaming at the mouth Ric basher. You think some Ric owners get a touch sensitive? Yep.

How would you feel if Spector Basses (or whatever brand you like) were continually bashed, lied about, myths and rest? Would you just sit there and let it go? If so, you may be a better person than I am.

Btw, I'm not "a guy from the Ric boards" whatever that would entail.

And so this thread reveals the real issue of owning a Rick....you get caught between the fanboys and the haters. Kind of like using a Mac, really :)

My two Ricks have been great, and if I had to reduce to one bass it would probably be my current 4003. But they are not for everybody, and for me they are not necessarily the best choice for every gig...no bass is.

These are the standard advertised prices. But that's not the point. We're talking about quality issues. Just because some people got them on a sale doesn't change that. $1000 is still too much to pay for a bass that has issues.

No one is foaming at the mouth here, well, maybe except for you. The OP asked what issues he may need to look for, and he's been answered.

Personally, I'm not overly concerned with random opinions from others about my current brand of choice. All brands have their issues and their detractors. Spending your life trying to hunt them down and prove them wrong is pointless. I own Fenders, yet I don't get all emotional when someone starts bashing them. Why? Because I know they can have issues and some people just don't like them.

:rollno: No. Try Pick of the Rics, Bass Northwest, etc. Get a quote. These reputable Ric dealers.

I consider Guitar Center/Musicians Friend to be impersonal warehouse retailers. I doubt they look at every instrument that comes through, and they don't really offer anything except bulk quantities. If Bass Northwest sends a Ric back because of a blem, do you think it's possible that Ric would re-ship it out to MF, knowing that they're not even going to look at it? Do you think the other manufacturers do this as well? Just food for thought.
