Apparently, the thing about moving is that when you have only one load left, and you go to pick it up, there's still two more. ??? But that's okay, because it's just two more. So you pick up the first. And when you go back for that last load... there's still two more.

Two more loads tomorrow. And I swear this better be it! :what:

My observation has been kind of a version of what you have discovered, that we have five times more junk than appears at first glance. I made my last move 15 years ago. No more.

When I was 24 I moved out of my parents house into the apartment I live in now. Mattress on the roof, box spring strapped down in the open trunk, everything else I own in the backseat and passenger seat of my 89 Taurus. Did it in one trip. (I didn't play bass at the time)

I was really eager to get out.

I'm actually about to leave the home next for the first time ever (not counting college apartments and dorms) this December/January! I'm pretty excited. I'm also planning on moving very little into it for the reasons stated in the OP :p

I'go you one better than that. We moved from a condo (couple thousand sq ft) to a two story house with a garage, bonus room with storage on each side, two out buildings, 4000 sq ft, and 4 acres and can't seem to find places to put everything we own. Figure THAT physics out.

Bit it also went as you said as well. Here's where I think we make mistakes with local moves (mine was about 4 miles). We think to ourselves "Nah. No need to pay for the big truck. We'll just get the little one and make a few trips. It's only a few miles, right?" Well, I learned the hard way (as you are now) that is DUMB! When moving hundreds of miles, people get the big truck and make it all fit in one run. Sometimes it even forces them to decide if they even NEED all that junk before moving. So they get rid of some of it. But those of us moving locally say (again) "Nah. No need to purge everything right now. We're only moving it a few miles, right?" STILL dumb.

If I ever move in this area again I am going to plan the move as if I were moving across country. Anything I don't have to have is going away and it's all going in ONE TRIP.

Going to a college that's around 6 hours away has really taught me how to prioritize necessities over needs when it comes to traveling. When you're working with limited space and no easy means to go back for more it makes you figure out what is really needed and what is superfluous. During my freshman year it took me two car trips to get all my stuff to school with me. By sophomore year I was down to one car trip, and I even had room to spare in the trunk :D

I'm with you man. My wife and I moved out of a 1500 sq foot house into a nearly 4000 sq foot house and I've said way too many times "where did we put all this stuff in the old house?"

I hope not for your sake. The last place I moved from was after 16 years. What a pain in the ass that was. I just loaded the immediate essentials into my truck (bed, clothes, etc.) and then I just rented the biggest truck I could and did it in as few trips as possible. I think I did it in two or three, if I recall correctly. Then I had a friend come over and between her truck and mine we took everything else I didn't want anymore to the Goodwill. That was another 4 or so trips. I don't want to do that again anytime soon.
