Guess you haven't priced ringtones much. They cost more than songs you download for your mp3 player regardless of who you get them from. The industry realized it's a huge profit center, they can actually sell more ringtones than digital downloads despite the higher price. What a world!
My friend took his ipod to the apple store yesterday becasue his headphone jack is messed up. They said it would cost $150 to fix it! The tech said "maybe you should just get a new one"

i've used macs since i was a kid... typing this on my macbook right now. can't stand PCs. honestly i don't much care for the iphone either. if you're trying to get ringtones for your phone it doesn't really matter who you go to, it's going to be stupidly and frustratingly protected from doing that. don't get me started on Rogers.
i just think that judging the whole company based on the ability to create ringtones is pretty ridiculous. and whatever gripes you guys might have about Apple, i had a clamshell ibook, an ibook G3, and now a macbook, and yeah they've all had some problems but i always got applecare and never once had to pay for a repair or had to wait more than two weeks for it to be fixed. the customer service that i've experienced has always been very polite and helpful. my dad, an engineer, now works at the vancouver apple store on the weekends as his "hobby" outside of his regular job because he loves the atmosphere and the company so much. my silver ipod mini i've had for years now and we've rebuilt it with parts from ebay to keep it going. apple's design usually demonstrates a keen sense of ergonomics and intuitiveness that makes other products look and feel like frustrating user-unfriendly blocks.
i understand that other people have had terrible experiences with the company and i have to respect your opinions but my personal experiences with Apple have always been great and so our opinions are just going to differ.

Ok, here ya go - how to make a ringtone from a song in iTunes:
DISCLAIMER - I don't know if this will work with songs purchased through iTunes store since I don't buy music from iTunes. I get most music from emusic.com
1. Under EDIT>Preferences>General tab>import settings make sure that you have it set to "Import settings using AAC encoder".
2. Find the song you want to use as a ringtone and play it. Watch for the time in the song that you want the ringtone sample to start. Note that time.
3. Right click on the song and select "Get Info"
4. Click on the Options tab. Click in the "Start time" and "Stop time" boxes. In the start time box enter the time in the song that you want the ringtone to start and put the stop time in the stop time box. I believe it must be 30 seconds or less for a ringtone. Click OK and close the box.
5. Now right click on the song again and select "Create AAC version" from the menu. It will create a copy of the song that consists only of the section that is between the Start time and Stop time that you indicated.
6. Right click on that snippet and copy. Then go to whatever folder you keep your ringtones in and paste the snippet.
7. Right click on the snippet that you just pasted and click "Rename". Then change the .m4a file extension to .m4r
8. Drag that ringtone into the ringtones section of iTunes from the folder. You now have a new ringtone to add to your phone.
9. Be sure to delete the snippet from the music section of iTunes and also go back into the original song options and remove the start time and end time so that it plays the whole song next time you want to listen to it.
That may sound complicated but once you've done it a couple of times its very fast.

Ringtones or not, I have noticed the last 2 years that apple really doesn't give a crap about their customers if your warranty is out and you don't have apple care, which is completely ignorant. I have had huge problem with the airport on my macbook (the 2,16 ghz with the "old" bus) and it was there more or less from the start, and comes and goes depending on what update version of osx I install. Apple just nods at me and say "you are out of warranty", but I hardly think it's a hardware problem since it works more or less bad depending on the version of OS X.
This is a problem they will soon find out, that the more people that start to use your software, the more pressure you will get on support, and the more important it is to have a pretty generous good will attitude, or else, you are not better than the others (read M$) ..
So imho, as an apple (or at least OS X, as their hardware is ridiculously overpriced for the "quality" you get) lover, I tend to agree with OP, but not based on anything that has to do with iPhone (I don't even have a cellphone...)...
Troubling for Jobs, hope he has a plan for this ...
