Are burst finishes out?

No, I really don't care what people think is appropriate or "standard" (probably why I don't have a Pbass playing thru an Ampeg SVT Fridge). I love burst finishes. As a matter of fact, I am thinking about having one of my basses refinished in an emerald green burst with matching headstock!

You didn't happened to have taught bass at Foxes music in Falls Church Virginia back in like 1970 did you?

My bass instructor back then had a p bass that looked like that. He used to shake his head when I walked in sportin' my Vox "Cougar" semi-hollow with the plastic tape wounds.

I would argue the exact opposite, that burst have never been more popular. There has been a lot of innovation in bursts the past few years, not sure if it’s due to advances in materials or techniques, but the multicolor bursts especially over burled wood, with all sorts of wild names, blues and purples and reds and greens and oranges and all sorts of really wild stuff. I love them.

Yeah Kinda old fashion, despise Tobacco like Brown Basket ball shoes!though PRS' are nice but only on guitars! No one ine the bass field doing it like them! Id say sparkle is the new thing & that chameleon Purple/Blue flash paint.
I just saw a tribute band, Bass player had a Tobacco P bass. Man it looked so old fasion & out of style. Just plain old looking, not cool at all!

I guess because I'm old, sunburst finishes speak to me. When I was a kid a lot of local bands had sunburst instruments, bands on TV would have sunburst instruments, my dad played with musicians with sunburst instruments. I wanted a sunburst instrument, it ended up being a bass.

I do NOT like sunburst. Yet, I have this really high quality lightweight sunburst body that I won't sell because it works so well. I married it to a wenge/ebony fretless neck and the whole package is great. Pic below.

And, of my 5 instruments, 3 are burst with two being sunburst. I guess I've gotten used to them and am accepting of the compromise. My e-gtr is a wonderful cherry burst over flame maple. Love that one.

In my opinion (worth what it costs you...) burst finishes in tasteful colors are attractive and will always be.

I don't think burst finishes are out. I love them. Have a classic 3 tone sunburst Fender J that I love. And am looking to get a matching P. Tort guard of course. Timeless look and ages beautifully.

I particularly like this color combo because it blends in. I can strap this instrument on in any setting and not draw too much attention to myself. As a side man I find this to be beneficial.
