Are burst finishes out?

I've noticed that some TB members have been condemning burst finishes in threads over the past year or so. It got me wondering, "are burst finishes not as popular as they once were? If they are much less popular, then what are the colors/finishes that everyone is into right now?"

Yes. Which is why I only do reverse burst finishes because it cancels out another persons burst finish.

Not a fan of sunburst finishes, do appreciate a well executed tobacco burst, but my favorite color is blue, so I had my Lakland done this way...

A 'burst finish has to look "just right" for me to really appreciate it. The vast majority of 'burst finishes don't do it for me.

One of my favorite 'burst finishes was a three tone sunburst on an EBMM Stingray with a tort guard I had in the '90s. Another was a three tone sunburst on a first year Fender AVRI J bass I had.

Never say never...Two finishes I loathed were burst and natural. Well here I am fifty years later and I just finished a burst Jazz build and I like it! Next will be a natural finish Jazz, when the body arrives next week!

When a color is just ringed in black, it looks like 60's pawnshop garbage to me.

As far as I can tell, Silverburst is the worst.

I saw a long conversation about this on another site. Most seem to feel it's a generational thing. Sunbursts and classic models that color inside the lines appeal to the older folks more, young people prefer solid colors and more unique or individual looks, instruments that may not be traditional (they don't care a bit if something is 'correct') but allow them to show their individuality.

Sunburst out, any other kind of burst in. The colour into black looks kinda bad, but like a honeyburst, tobacco burst where the burst goes into red or yellow or something looks great

Don't get it...I l love a good burst.

Put playing my jazz elite in burst with black pickgaurd and love the conservative look it has.

I have 2 J-bursts, 2 P-bursts and 1-Tele burst, so, I'd say no, I love a good burst.

I've always hated then. I own one that I play simply becuase the feel and sound of the bass outweighs the awful finish. But I have defidently shied away from basses over the years becuase of burst finishes
