Are burst finishes out?

I don't hate no basses, not even the fugly ones.
People should always like what they like and others should just realise that is the way it is.
Bursts are often nice looking when they are done right.
As was said earlier here Tort should be outlawed for it really does make anything look cheap.
Growing up it was every where; car interiors to page dividers in school note books, it was the new Bakelite of late sixties and seventies.
It was brittle, smelled bad quickly, slippery as ice and it was on every thing that was of cheap quality. It was actually so popular it was used as a selling feature.
That is why people from my generation often say “ Popular does not mean it is worthwhile or good..
Thus why we do not trust it.

Are you even a bassist if you haven't owned a FSO in 3TS w/Tort?
I’ve played about 800 gigs without one of those. So far, nobody has complained about my lack of burst and/or tort. Maybe the folks that keep calling me for gigs are all color blind.

I used to dislike bursts, but they seem to be my preference now. No conscious shift. My aesthetics just moved that way.
Bursts aren't inherently bad. But they can and do sometimes look kind of forced, specifically when it's a "sunburst" and there's a really large difference in the colors used. When this is the case, I think that they look best when they have a binding, like Gibson usually does:

Fender-shaped objects usually don't have this feature, and so to me they always kind of look a bit derpy and unfinished. (I own a Jay Turser telecaster that does have the binding strip on the front and back sides of the body, and even though the burst itself isn't all that great, it works because of the binding. It also doesn't have contours - the body is a slab - which is why it works.) That said, I do like some of the purples and blues and greens that I've seen, specifically the darker ones where the burst is more subtle.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, though. Even if your sunburst is bigger and brighter than a supernova, audiences won't notice or care since you're the bass player.

That burst is just about the best burst job I've ever seen, such a smooth and subtle transition, bloody beautiful and I'm not a big fan of burst finishes. Mainly because most of them look so obvious, with the colors poorly merged from one to the other. The leery bright yellow, to bright red, to black ones are the types I find the hardest to like. Still it's all just colors and preferences on bass guitars, nothing to get bent out of shape over. Except for pearloid, that really grates with me, reminds me of ugly 50's Formica, yuk!
