Now that I can agree with. I will say that for myself, I think someone should buy whatever bass they need in order to play their best.Agreed - but there's "Professional grade" and then there's "conspicuous consumption"; But yes - folks who insist that all you need is what amounts to a $200 knock-off Fender are kidding themselves, just as folks who insist that you simply MUST play a $3000 bass to be taken seriously.
I think expensive basses are necessary, as evident in my avatar. I also think reasonably prices basses are necessary. Different strokes. Play whatever you can afford, and what is comfortable to you. And, what get's you that tone...
Note: It might take multiple basses to find that tone.

2 words: Joe Dart.
One of the baddest cats around, baddest tone, and he's got a $300 bass. I happen to have some expensive ones because I like them, but need them?
I'll let your ears decide that.
Sure or his friends says they arent so good LOL.I read about this on TB but have never seen it myself. The great players I have seen all play professional grade equipment. Just my experience.
Honestly, it's just a bass. How expensive does it really have to be?
I don't know, what thread did you read?
5+ years of listening to TB whining about people who spend more than $100 on a bass may have colored my perception of what I read. And for the record, my main bass was $600, so I'm not an expensive bass snob. I just get sick of some people telling other people what they need.![]()
Unless your married! When figuring out how much to spend on a bass, the only things that matter are:
(1) Can you afford it?
(2) Are you comfortable spending that much?
If the answer to both questions is "yes," then it doesn't matter if your bass was $100 or $10,000. If it does what you like you don't need to justify it to anyone one way or the other.
Or unless you're married, you both worked, with no children.Unless your married!![]()
