Are Landing basses THAT good?

I'm thinking of getting a new bass and I'm thinking of going with Landing. He's asking a fair chunk of change more than I really want to spend, but if his basses are good I might be willing to dole out a few more hundred.

I do have and love my shortie Stambaugh but it is a very modern looking bass and since I play roots rock, surf and rockabilly it looks a bit wrong. Obviously, its more about getting a cool new bass than anything. :ninja:

I am thinking of getting Landing to build me a shortscale tele bass. Basically its a guitar style tele with the tele headstock with a nut that will accommodate bass strings.

I'd throw a Darkstar pickup in it. Mahogany body with probably a rosewood top.

I was thinking of going with Stambuagh with this but he has close to a year's wait time. Landing is about 9 weeks and I know he's onboard with my design goals.

Anyway, is Landing build quality exceedingly good or just "pretty good?

Landings bass building is top of the line. Jimmy has built 3 basses for me and all were excellent and far better than anything else I have seen for the money. Plus Jimmy Wilson will take the time to make sure that you get what you want in the way of customizing a bass.

I hope they are good. I have one on order based on reputation alone since it's next to impossible to find one to try out. And they very rarely ever go on sale used, Bunny10's company excluded :)

Why don't you get a Landing DS1 or DS2?

Edit: oops, didn't carefully read the tele part, but cool to post that pix anyways...

How are the necks?

The neck is the most important part of a bass to me.

Are they super stable?

Assuming its a maple neck is it finished *very* smooth?

Thats a sweet looking bass, but the tele thing would suit my "retro" band more...

If I do go for Landing I *might* even sell my Stambaugh... but then again probably not. The Stammie rocks.

Yes, thats true. I guess I got it in November. I honestly doubt I'd sell it, but just dont know how much gigging time it would see *IF* the Landing were top notch.

The Stambaugh is built exceedingly well and I dont want to take a step down. Lateral yes, but if the quality is less than the Stambaugh, I doubt I'd go for it.

Why settle for less?

Man thats a load of smack for an axe. I've been fortunate to find a couple of good cheap basses that match very well with my technique. Traben Array Obsession $230.00 - Schecter Stiletto Custom $400.00 used but both in great condition and play fantastic.

Good luck on your purchase.

Dude, take what I say with a grain of salt as I mean no disrespect at all and actually it's rather superficial, but the look you give off with the cool hat and the outfit screams of having and old school retro looking bass just as you describe. I am sure the stammy is awesome, but is it the right fit?

I guess I'm playing devil's advocate to see where and if it might push you in one direction. It's all good, man!

I hear ya Gassie. $1600 clams is alot to part with though just for the "look".

I'm not sure if I'm *that* vain. :help: However, I have the money saved sitting at home in an envelope with no particular place to go. I got a big payday from a gig a couple weeks ago that basically pays for 1/3 of the bass, so its not like I cannot afford it.

Its better to spend it on a nice bass than just piss it away right? :cool:

To clarify my previous post, yeah man if you got it go for it I didn't mean it any other way than I don't have the $$$ so I'm blessed to have found 2 bass guitars that suites me very well for under $700.00. However I'm going down that 'gotta' have road right now desiring the Mesa Boogie Walkabout 300W amp at $1K, but my Eden WTX260 does just fine although #2 in my heart I've test driven the Walkabout many times and each time it gets harder to walk out the door without it :)

I'm not certain how to answer this.

The necks feel very smooth and the edges don't have that fret tang sticking out that some necks have. So they seem smooth, but I can't speak to how they would feel to you

They are very stable, they keep in tune very easily and adjust easily also.

All of my bass necks have been rosewood so I can't speak to the maple necks.
