My high school English teachers were dumbasses.
Not to sound racist, but my 11th grade English teacher spoke in Ebonics sometimes.
My 12th grade English teacher misspelled words all the time, and I was the only person in the class intelligent enough to point it out. OTOH, perhaps I was the only one that cared. No one seems to care about spelling anymore.
Theft is a crime of opportunity.
If a stranger took your stuff then he/she likely stole from other residences as well. Have you talked to your neighbours?
In response to the "Grammar police" issue, remember that the ONLY thing we see/hear from you is what, and how, you type.
Slow down, use punctuation, use correct spelling. It really does make your post easier to read. I, for one, appreciate a nicely written, well thought out post.

Very true. I was once and still am in a situation where someone close to me or my family is a thief. Stuff has been taken from my house on many occasions where the only people that could know about it where friends or people that have been in the house. We've had 3 Xbox 306s taken, a DS Lite, my moms jewelery, my brothers wallet and numerous video games. I don't think I handled it well at all because I didn't confront anyone (going on the advice of my parents). I just stopped letting them in my house and only letting people that I completely trust in. There haven't been anymore thefts since I started.

My 8th grade English teacher had the worst case of cankles I've ever seen. She didn't let her condition keep her from wearing sexy footwear however. (At least I assume it was sexy foot wear, all you could really see was the toe and the heel sticking out from under her copious rolls of cankle flesh.) Cankles and high heels....... I think I just grossed myself out.
I assume your friends are kinda young. Do they drink and get high? Do they have regular gainful employment? If not, then yeah, they ripped you off.
Not so much grammar as presentation. 'Round these parts, the way your post read was like listening to Vanilla Ice in his prime. Don't take it too hard just keep it in mind and if it really bothers you just ignore it and look for the actual responses. There are quite a few here with some good tips.
some are. language is ultimately a tool for effective communication. there is a point where breaking down the rules of grammar will significantly impede upon effective communication. OTOH ( <--TB accepted break down of grammar), not all venues of language use are the same. being able to write in formal english has its place, like in a cover letter for a job. e-z spelling has its place, like in a text message. if have command of both, you have the power to choose how you will use language to suit your needs. posting on the interweb sits somewhere in the middle, and apparently, we all draw our arbitrary line slightly differently. vive la difference.
btw, i found your op clear and readable.
speaking of which, bummer of a situation. i think the issue to address is how you are going to ask (confront) your friends. i think a watered-down version of jive's deliciously manipulative plan could bwork. talk to them individually, but with the idea that you are trying to help save them from possible repercussions. of course, if they are savvy teens they will probly see thru that. maybe a suggestion that you all won't be allowed to keep partying at the lake if stuff like that happens?

As far as my take on your thread...Are your friends thieves? I dunno, are they?
I got some friends that are thieves and dirtbags, but I know that they are. It's rather simple to find this out. A conversation could go like this:
You: "Stealing is most awesome. I just got a new iPod/Discman/Walkman from the local electronics store. They did not notice the thievery due to the extreme stealth through which I obtained it. Do you agree that stealing is most righteous, ole chap?"
Dirtbag: "Yes, good Sir, I do agree that stealing items is most enjoyable."

Regarding the "grammar police", poor grammar reflects a lack of really giving a damn, potential laziness, and/or possibly very poor intellect. All of which prompt me to keep my distance, personally. In all reality, it doesn't take too long to hit the "?" key!
I was a criminal in my younger days and I was shocked to discover that many of my friends were thieves. And they even stole from other thieves! Sigh.
Laziness in communication is rude to the person you communicate with. I guess this is what ticks people off.
