Are plexiglass(clear) basses any good?

Do you like plexiglass(see-through) basses?

The bassist from The Locust uses an acrylic bass, but then again they are a noise grind band lol.

I haven't owned one, but have played one for a good 20 minute stint lol.

My view basically shadows genocide roaches of being kind of dull. Could have been that I only spent 20 minutes on it.

They look cool that's for sure.

I played a Dan Armstrong Ampeg g**tar once, and it was a real boat anchor. I don't think I could play the bass unless I sat down, and that kind of ruins the effect.:eyebrow:

Plus, the necks are short scale, which kills it for me.:hmm:

I played a Dan Armstrong Plexiglass bass way back and only used it for 1 gig. My impressions were that it was cold and sterile sounding and I didn't care for the way it felt/played either. Other than the uniqueness of being transparent I felt that it had nothing to offer but I'm sure there are some players out there who like them. Just my 2 cents.

Haven't ever played one, but if I had one on a gig... I'd strap it so low that the body of the bass would be hanging in front of my crotch. Then, play one song with my d**k hanging out and observe the audience. Just one song. Then act as nothing had happened and continue the gig normally.

It would be funny as hell.

I saw one the other day. My reaction was, hey, look, there's a clear plasic bass (except for the electronics box). Kewl. But it wasn't a tire-kicking trip, so I didn't pick it up. Sure, it's a visual gimmick. If it sounds like hell, that's all it is. But I'm willing to forgive a lot of weight for a sound I like. I just don't see why a clear plastic bass would have that sound.

I played one a million years ago. I remember not being impressed at all, but of course I have no recollection of the brand or any of the specs. I doubt it was short scale or anything. It didn't seem to have the resonance of wood, though...and not in a good way like Steinberger.

I have a Grand 5 string that is very cool. I replaced the JJ style stock pickups with a set of Bartolini pickups and it is fine now. My only complaint is when the bridge was installed on the body, it was not installed totally in the center of the neck, this makes it easy to fall off of the neck on the G string above the 12th fret. No biggie, very cool bass and a killer sound.
