are the short scale basses your thing?

I have been playing long scale basses for 42 years but a year ago, bought a Squier VM Jaguar short scale and I've really started to enjoy the instrument again. I've got the short scale bug and recently got a Warwick Corvette Rockbass short scale secondhand which plays and sounds amazing. I'm never going back to long scale.

I've owned those cheap Fender P bass before and a DeArmond (they were all standard or long scales). The reach was really the issue. Now that I got my Ibanez Mikro, feels more natural.

I have the same issue - the reach hurts my shoulder. I recently bought a Supro Huntington H3 which I love (30” scale). I also got a Gruv Gear Duo Strap. After a LOT of fiddling around with it, it’s work well on my 34” scale Sadowsky. Both are keeping me playing!

Me too. Feels a lot more natural. I'm surprised the Mikro Bass is actually still longer than the Mikro guitar, which I also have. LOL.

Looking back now, the Jackson Minion looks a lot like a kid's bass guitar and slightly off. Mikro won me.

I actually just recently picked up a Mikro, and I don't think I'll ever go back to full scale. The neck just feels so much more comfortable to my stubby fingers.

For 80% of my gigs, I use the short scales. I still have a couple long scales, and have no problem switching between them. I’m 5’10” with slightly larger than average hands. My latest acquisition, is the most comfortable short scale I have owned.

I have a medium scale bass and even though I'm huge, I really like it. The length of the neck is not as much an issue as the string spacing being so small. Do they make a medium or short scale that has spacing more like a jazz neck? also are there short scale 5ers? I've been gigging my squire 5 a TON and after two consecutive gigs (7+ hours) twice a week my back and shoulder have been hurting.

I’m 5’2” and currently play my custom build 35” 11 lb.custom built Ramirez. I did learn on a Fender musicmaster Bass. It’d be cool to have one for the sake of variety and sound options- but ultimately (as already suggested) it’s a matter of comfort and style choice. I could go either way perhaps-but another scale size is a great option.

My first bass was a Squier Bronco, and now I'm back playing a couple of PJ Mustang basses. In effect I've come full circle. I'm 5ft 11 and fairly broad shouldered, so the idea of playing a small bass didn't really make sense for the longest time. I've been through a raft of 34'' basses, including a couple of P and J basses and a few of that ilk. However I find the Mustangs work for getting ideas out from my brain and into my hands. I prefer playing them live as well.

Maybe, deep down, the slab-bodied Mustang outline of the Bronco left more of an impression than I initially thought.

AFAIK - standard is 34", medium is 32", short is 30". Other sizes are usually listed as length in inches.

I have two - a Namm Mustang p/j and a 2008 copy of a dan-electro longhorn. It took a little bit to get used to them (my main bass is a Precision) but I've grown to really like them - they're really fun to play - and since i do have a little srthritus, they are easier on my hands.

I play a medium scale 32 inch Yamaha Motion B II, and it is the best of both worlds; light, punchy, but 24 frets and tight action. Surprised there aren't more 32 scales around

My Birdsong is a 5er and I love it to pieces. It is the only short scaled bass I've played.

I've touched a few of these in store, short scale bass guitars from Jackson to Ibanez. I do have the Mikro short scale electric guitar from Ibanez. I like how short scale feels like as if I can actually have better control or grip of it, maybe it's because I'm only 5'7" in height and perhaps my fingers are small. Do you think that's the reason? If you were taller than me, would a regular or standard sized bass guitar feel more natural? I'm shopping around for another bass guitar and I've eyed a few short scale ones and some standard sizes as well from Yamaha such as these:

The only non-long scale bass I've owned was a 4003.

Played a couple of short & medium scale basses, but they aren't my thing.
