I just realized even though I've owned Korg keyboards, drum machines, and oldschool rackmount effects, I've never owned, used, or (obviously) reviewed any Korg pedals or modern rack units. I know some of you guys have the AX 1/3/5/10/3000B, but do you recommend them? Are there any particular Korg products that you think more bassists should check out?

(I'm talking about effects, not tuners!!!)

Yup on the Pandora's. I know it is not a pedal but they are very good as headphone amp and the effects and sounds are very decent.

I once knew a guitarist who was so fond of his Pandora that he used it in his rig. He used it live.
Off course it was not easy to switch presets while playing.

IIRC bassybill also uses/used a Pandora for gigs.

I used an old, beat up Toneworks G2 multi, designed for electro-acoustic guitar... it had one flavor of chorus (80's in a box, that kind of chorus), some octave up (to simulate 12-stringed guitars, specially good in stereo), some fixed delays and a wide array of reverb. It had compression and a build in tuner, in a design much wanted today: like a real tuner encrusted in the thing (it's own leds and all). It had great sounds and I very much liked it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the G5. Good call.

Have any of you personally compared the sound quality between any of their differently-priced multieffects? I.e. are any of them noticeably worse at the cheap end of the spectrum, or are any of the cheaper ones "just as good sounding" as the flagship more expensive models?

I'm quite the fan of Korg multis, especially green series from the 90s.

It may just be because I know them very well and started using them very early in my playing.
To me they have a perfect balance. Very easy to tweak onstage, reliable, foolproof while offering a vast array of tones you can't find anywhere else.

The newer series aren't as good IMHO.
The AX-10B is simply worthless.
AX3 and 5B while doing a good job don't sound as "pro" as older series. It's hard to get an ample, steady tone without a lot of tweaking. Editing is a PITA with too much data on a 2 digit screen.
The AX-3000B has a fantastic user-friendly interface with a lot of nice functions. You can use the expression pedal in a lot of innovative ways, coupled with the step sequencer. I find it a bit too cumbersome to my taste and for some reason prefer the tone of the green units.
Pandoras are very useful practice tools.
The G5 is perect at what it does.

I have a a4 I still love it , can't sell it, it has 2 foostswitch controlers, two modes of synth besides chorus flanger, a good reverb, compress &exciter a very good and extensive eq , tuner, delay etc with all the features that may need, such great product

Best overall sound would be the 30B/300B (they're almost identical), mostly because ADA converters are fantastic and don't steal a bit of tone.
They have a dual editing system, a complicated one with a lot of tweakability and a super simple mode with one parameter per effect. Fantastic filters and a few unique effects such as the perc system, basically a sample player triggered by your attacks.

This said, I prefer the AX-1B because it's small and covers pretty much any need one may have. Only one parameter per effect, with is good and bad but allows very simple edition on the fly.

Since it's your pet peeve, compression on all these is simplistic and intense. Only 2 parameters, a bit of pumping and hissing on extreme settings. Used alone it's not really useful but it is perfect to thicken your tone before attacking a cascade of effects behind.

I had the AX-3000B for a while. I think it is an excellent introduction into effects, and like crystalman said has a lot of option and intuitive user interface, and being able to save 40 something presets is pretty sweet too. The modulation and reverb sounded the best to me, and you can do something interesting stuff with the wah/expression pedal.

Buuuuuttttt, overall I think the think was something of a tone sucker. I could get much better clean sounds without running through the korg. Definately not true bypass. But for the $100 used i paid for it you can do a lot. I'd reccomend it as an entry level type effect.
