For me, it's about the right string for the bass. Some work great, others not so much. I see someone said they dislike Cobalts. I love them on my Stingray Special. It just goes to show that one person's junk is another person's gold. One string set that never worked for me despite several very expensive tries over the years was the Ti Jazz flats 5 string set. I could never get the .136 B string to feel or sound right. At over $100 a set, I can't afford to try again. I love the 4 string set. I have them on my Hofner Very Thin.

Half rounds or flat wounds. Put either of those on a bass, and I'll literally sprain my plucking fingers (I have done this) trying to dig the sound I want out of them.

I used to play Ernie Ball Cobalts, but they didn't last more than a few hours. I've never liked any D'Addario string I've tried either. Good thing we have lots of options!

I don't think there is a string that I couldn't eventually get used to BUT...

I really don't like T.I.'s surprisingly, and I also do not care for any nickel that dies fast or Fenders strings (although I do enjoy the fender string tension, I'm a high tension kinda guy)

you know when fabric wears a little bit and forms those little fuzz balls? Like on old couches, or for me personally, since I have giant legs, the crotch and upper thighs of slacks.. those are called ‘pills,’ which is how I’d describe the crap on elixirs when they inevitably fall apart (admittedly not the most apt description but close enough)

I'm not thrilled with Fender flats. I think D'Addario makes them to Fender's formula, and I far prefer D'Addario's own formula.

Boomers (go dead after about 2 hrs of play time for me) and Chromes (sounded thin and weak, with no trace of that gut level thump you get from a set of LaBella DTF's).

Where to start? Ernie Ball, D'Addario, any half/ground wound and most others. I pretty much stick to the Dunlop, TI and DR worlds.

Tapewounds. I hate the plastic feel and the tone IMO offers nothing desirable for me compared to flats. The tension is usually a lot lower than I find comfortable too.
