Are these two cheapo basses the same?

RE: Houstonbrass.....

I have three MM clones from him(them, it's a husband/wife team IIRC). Also got the cheapo set neck SG bass clone from them as a project bass.
About the MM's from them:

Single pickup, 4 string sunburst, MM headstock, maple board, standard scale, LIGHTER weight than the blue one from Dr Tech.

Single pickup, 5 string black, MM headstock(4+1), maple board, standard scale, wieghs about the same as the blue Dr. Tech one.

Double pickup, 4 string natural, MM headstock, maple board, trussrod wheel system(at the heel end of the neck), standard scale. Weighs a ton but is the best looking of all(possibly has laminated maple top).

As mentioned before, of all 4 MM clones, I LOVE the Dr. Tech neck feel compared to the above probably because it feels most comfortable. I played 63 & 64 Gibson T-Birds for more than a decade(70's~80's) so any neck that is like those or like a Fender Jazz will be favored here.

Since I REALLY wanted a SS, I ended up buying a used Squier Mustang from a Guitar Ctr in KY. It doesnt appear to have a scratch on it and I got it for $170 (total) instead of paying $279 for new!

Hope the photo worked.

They look nice...but you can't play "nice"

Received copies of a guitar and bass from the Asian company that makes Washburns.
They look absolutely stunning and my name is on the headstock. They are proudly displayed on my studio wall.
One small issue: they are pretty much unplayable. Bad Pick ups and electronics, neck dive and every fret has fret sprout. I spent a few days trying to correct all these problems and I did. Now they are just low end copies.
They are back to hanging on the wall for viewing only.

My Dr. Tech finally arrived. Shipped very well, foam around the bass itself, paper between strings and fretboard. Box was also wrapped in bubblewrap. Took it out, very very clean no blemishes that I could find. Tuned it then checked the relief. Only had to do a small adjustment. Onto the pics.

If I was to complain about anything, which I'm not it's $100 bass. In the picture below the at the heel of the fretboard its a little rough. That's it though.

I just got my "Dr Tech" bass today. Has an extra 100 cash lying around so I figured what the hell. I didn't go for the "shinny" black though opting instead for the sunburst. I was surprised at the quality. The neck was smooth and the frets even After a little truss rod and bridge adjustment it was quite playable. As far as the sound,,The pickup is complete garbage as well as the electronics (hey what you want for a hundred bucks?) I'll probably throw an emg or a basslines in it and keep it

I don't have anything recorded just because I don't have any equipment to do so. The action on mine was super high when I received it. After I did a quick set up it was very playable. Sound is an "eh". Like a few people have talked about I'll probably just order up a different pick up for it. I really don't play it that often as I like the feel of my sx jazz better. So it's been my show off piece hanging up in my living room.

Stinsok: did you mean the Houston seller sunburst or Dr. Tech?

I'll try to get to soundclips the weekend of the 14th of the blue Dr. Tech and the sunburst Houston seller's version. I do know the Dr. Tech pickup on mine needs to be lowered because it is louder than my other basses(it makes my SVT sim go into distortion too easily. My Line 6 here is set so if playing normal = clean, playing harder pushes the sim into distortion....like the 70's SVT that used to be here was set up).

The Dr. Tech gets taken to outdoor gigs and shows where Budlight(can matches the bass color) is to be served or sponsoring.

These are all great post. I'm looking to add a second bass to learn the mechanics while doing some customizing. So naturally this seems to be a good choice. I would like an active pickup but getting a MM clone to play with without breaking the bank might be a better choice at this time.

Thanks to Johnny Crab & Stinsok for all the great info!

If I decided to buy, I will offer my feedback, pics and sound bites.
