Are you saying the perceived slowdown here is because of the platform moderators censoring content?
If so, I call that bunk. It’s their platform and they make the rules, we actually have to opt into their rules when we sign up for talkbass. Moderation is not censorship or a violation against anyone’s first amendment rights. Just to be clear.
I personally feel the perceived slowdown is because this type of forum does not appeal to millennials or GenZ. Their communication style is different, for us older folks, a forum like this is what we are comfortable with and moves at our speed.

Well, here's a great reason why the forums are so quiet...^^^
Free speech only protects you against the government. Talkbass is private property - they can bounce you or your posts at will without justifying. The same thing applies to any site/service you join and use.
I'm not quite an OG member, but have been around a while. My sense is that compared to many forums, TB is doing well. I still lament the fading away of Homerecording.com, which was an absolute zoo for a few years until it was bought out. Most fun I've ever had with the internet, and got a studio built while doing it.
The "talkbass" google search graphic on the first page of this thread is interesting. The causes of that are in flux. People used to use the forums more as libraries of information and, having grown up with brick and mortar libraries, would search in the ways that they learned there. But as the generations roll along, the experience brought to how we use a search engine has changed.

We have to remember, most new ppl get to Talkbass from a google search. I can't remember a time I've searched for something bass related and a talkbass link did not come up.
To also keep perspective, there are so many more resources for musicions now than there were even 10 years ago, let alone 20 years ago. For example, someone could be getting their info from only YT or even IG without the need to read thru pages and pages of old school forums.

I feel like we’re in a lull. However, it might be that I don’t feel as compelled to weigh in as much as before. (I mean, how many times in a lifetime does one need to weigh in on tort?) But my primary focus has always been on the classifieds, and there is little doubt that they aren’t as busy as they once were. In general, items hang around significantly longer before getting dealt. But that has been going on for awhile now.
I wonder if people just can’t afford to buy as much gear nowadays. So they’re avoiding talking about it.
My original account was started around that time. From like 2012 till like 2018 I was on TB daily. Miss the mobile app, lol. Had my bandmates even asking me whenever I'd come by with new gear or saying I was buying new gear if it was related to TB. Then I started to feel like I had learned as much as I was gonna, and more and more I was just seeing "Young people XYZ - Death of XYZ part of the industry" and "Old people XYZ - Out of touch". That and the dancing around not being "politicial", but it being pretty apparent what folks were on about. It got boring and seemed like a fair amount of posts were just "man shakes fist at clouds". So I'd just made this account so that this one didn't have my name in it, and then sorta disappeared
Been back a little while, all that stuffs still here, but this is something I can do either at work or when bored without seeing a bunch of overtly political crap or adverts like on Reddit. Even still, been thinking about just unplugging from all the sites except ol Youtube for gear stuff and band vids.

So music wise, I got a lot on my plate. Less time to just chill on the forums when practicing, writing and recording each take their own slice of time.
But it's still the best place for info about bass, bar none. Yes I see a lot of recycled content but all the new stuff is here as well. A lot of engaged conversations seem to be recycled stuff but the new knowledge is still a good search away with some smart filtering and never takes long to get to it with some patience.

In all seriousness, I'm a multi-instrumentalist and my bass skills haven’t been requested lately. I do miss playing. When I have time, I let my Ric rip through an ancient Bassman combo.

I find my interest ebbs and flows...when I am playing a lot I seem to fall away from TB and when my playing commitments slow down, I have more time for TB and learning and solo practice.
OK ya want some action? Watch this:
1. Tort pickguards are lame, especially when combined with sunburst. Yuck.
2. Tone woods make all the difference with your sound, if you're not sporting AAAA maple or bubinga it's going to sound like crap no matter what.

That's fascinating and to some degree reassuring (for the survival of the culture). But is that a breakdown of membership, or posting volume? It sure seems like the majority of the posts I see where people give a clue as to their age seem to be from posters between 55 and 70.
I can honestly say as I started playing double bass my visits have lessened and shortened.
And yes, the argumentative posts are just so unnecessary and useless. Especially when someone new to bass is just looking for and answer or help. Regardless of whether or not it has been discussed a million times...

3. In order to be really really good at metal, the best bass is an Aria Pro II SB-1000 Black and Gold to play like Cliff Burton. Either that or the only option is a Dingwall. So plan to invest at least 4 grand into your bass if you want someone to take your metal playing seriously.

Personally, I've had less engagement with TB in the past year or so, but my participation has always been something that varies a lot depending on how much time I have and how much bass I'm playing. COVID and post-COVID were major deflection points for a lot of people's schedules and priorities.
