Are we supposed to enjoy rehearsing?

Hey guys

I've been in this band for about 2 months now. We've played 2 gigs, and we've recorded 4 tracks. We rehearse for 2 hours every Friday. I really enjoyed the first couple of rehearsals but all the ones after that have been painfully boring. Everyone else in my band enjoys rehearsing, and they are all "full of adrenaline" by the end of it. Are rehearsals supposed to be an enjoyable experience or do most musicians find them boring?

NOTE: I do really enjoy the other aspects of being in this band (gigging and recording), I just don't enjoy the rehearsals.

I enjoy rehearsing, but prefer playing gigs. We're an original band, though, so rehearsals are pretty necessary and can be a lot of work at times. Mostly rehearsals are used to go over newer songs until theyre committed to memory and we consistantly perform them well. At that point we only rehearse those songs on an "as needed" basis.

Well, I generally hate rehearsing on Fridays or Saturdays.

Same here. Those are the only nights I dont have work the next morning and have more time to do things I cant normally do during the week.

Well, I generally hate rehearsing on Fridays or Saturdays. I'll do them if required, but I'm always thinking, "This is a major gig night. I could be playing a gig tonight instead of rehearsing...or I could be spending my night off doing something else." Rehearsals can be fun, but they are nowhere near as fun to me as a gig. Writing during a rehearsal is usually more exciting than working on cover material, though.

I don't get excited over a rehearsal, but I don't hate them unless they're unproductive.

Yes... You are supposed to enjoy all things music.
Rehearsals,gigs & recording.
Why after only being in the band for 2 months are you "bored" at rehearsals?
Is the music the band plays not challenging enough?

Depends. Rehearsal is not the same as practice. If your band members don't practice between rehearsals, and your "rehearsals" are where they are learning their parts, I don't blame you for being bored. If "rehearsals" are where members are writing their parts, again, boring. Rehearsals are for putting the pieces together, ironing out small issues of the song's structure ... ie, it's a dry run of what you'll play at the gig.

I just don't get this...
Someone basically says, I choose to do a specific activity but I really don't like it. I find it boring. Do I have to like it? If I don't like it do I have to keep doing it?

No you don't have to like it and no you don't have to keep doing it!
Go find something you like to do and then do that.
If you don't like something after two months, believe me, it isn't going to get better for you.
Take up SCUBA diving or something.

I enjoy the heck of of rehearsals, as long as they're productive. I love building something out of nothing, into a smokin' show. Then I like springing it on the people, to see their reactions. Then, I like to analyze what worked, what didnt, & figure out what to do better, then rehearse it some more!

Yes and No

You have to put the work in to improve and sometimes that's no fun
or maybe the band isn't working, you're bored and that's why its no fun

The band needs to put the work in
do the work for the first hour of rehearsal
then have some fun
just jam, have some beers or bingers
play the theme to batman...whatever

you need both work and fun to make it worthwhile

You're not "supposed" to, you either do or you don't, but it's nice when you do.

Sometimes they're almost (almost) as fun as a gig for me, other times it's just a tad boring. But I never hate it since I get to play music with other people. That always runs from at the least, entertaining, to at its best, awesome.

Woah, when I read the title, I thought you were going to go in the opposite direction, asking if rehearsals were supposed to be enjoyable experiences or intense, brain stretching, sweat producing examinations.

If you're bored, maybe you know your stuff down, or maybe your not pushing your limits of hearing and limits of playing enough.

Eg. If you've got a decent bass lines down perfect, then make an amazing bass lines down perfect. If you already have that too, then add in back vocals. Make yourself work.

Some rehearsals are boring. If overall, you like the people you're with and enjoy the music its all good. If everyone else likes it and you're the only one who is bored.....hmmm, I wonder what's going on with you? Maybe you're a more advanced musician or something I don't know.

I've been a sub for a few P&W bands where the rehearsals were just torture. A couple of people get into an issue and you stand there for 45 minutes. Then everyone just plays what they want anyway. I couldn't do that on a regular basis for very long.
