We 70's & 80's guys are a little old school in stereo equipment. I have experimented with various speakers & different types of subwoofers. I used to have a living room full of speakers, wife said all has to go. Down to sub with surrounds. To me the 1st thing in good stereo sound is the source. Like previous posters have said, wave files remove some of the sound bits, mp3 even more. I remember how well vinyl sounded. I would play the album then play the same in a CD. Noticeable difference.

Yeah, for reasons of space I'm only collecting CDs right now. I may expand to include vinyl copies of my absolute albums on CD.

My SO's father put it there in the late 1950s and we have no plans on removing it. It stayed in place throughout the gut renovation we did last year, protected with a sheet of luan screwed down over it. And it still works and sounds great (for such a speaker from so long ago).

Finished room, with the original speaker grill in place, before we had the custom fireplace screen made by a local blacksmith.

What passes for speakers with computers and home theater systems (sound bars, surround sound, subwoofers, etc) is pure garbage. It's all Overwhelming bass and tinny highs with 3" drivers. There's zero mids. It drives me nuts.

I don't add pieces to my system very often. Was happy with my relatively budget system except for the deep bass. Last month added an SVS SB-3000 subwoofer. It fills in what was missing. Really happy with this purchase. Top two pics represent current position of the sub. My rig now stands as follows:

I can't always sit in the animal print listening chair. Sometimes I listen from a sofa on the side of this room. My mother-in-law sits to my left. Speakers are to my right. She enjoys listening to music but I can't sit with my back to her due to her possibly slipping off of the sofa. The system still images 'decently' from the side position.

So, anyone else here doing the HiFi thing?

It's amusing how this makes Hifi and uncompressed audio sound like a minority audiophile thing.
Actually, before music regressed into using mp3 everyone listened to Hifi music, whether it was FM radio, cassette tape, vinyl or CD. Some of those may have had additional noise but the music itself was fully present and complete instead of having been lossly-compressed and partially present due to dubious audio perception logic.

CD was especially Hifi and almost everyone, including the most casual non-audiophile listener, used that before mp3. The regression is disappointing and surprising, and no longer necessary due to the exponential availability of memory.
I don't dislike mp3, i listen to it a lot, but i consider it low quality audio even at 320kbps. It's also a rather bizarre format due to being partial music.

It can easily keep up with my Vandersteens and play loud enough to do hearing damage. The bass it puts out is deep and tight. The free app makes setup and adjustment easy. Fit and finish is excellent. Customer support is first rate. For home theater you might want to purchase a pair if you like your sound effects really loud. For my situation one subwoofer works well. It fills my fairly good size room with an appropriate amount of deep bass without making stuff rattle or vibrate.

I'm very glad I bought B&W 802's in 1980 before they cost more than a small car. I've never fed them very well, but they still are among the most musical speakers I've ever heard. I doubt if I'd find the space or spend the money now, but they'll never leave. I did have to re-solder one, but other than that, audio perfection.

Maybe I'm just into "mid - fi"

- have decent systems in my garage, living room, and basement
- none of my gear is expensive or impressive (however I receive compliments from guests all of the time)
- friend of 15 years was absolutely baffled by the fact that I had recently spent $400 on a record player and $110 on a phono cartridge ("you just spent over $500 on DEAD TECHNOLOGY" he said) Yes, and it is worth every penny.

I'm not much into hi-fi anymore, and the term "audiophile" has a well-earned pejorative connotation among my pro sound friends, but of all the speakers that I've ever heard, the best sounding ones were some ribbon panel on a bass-cab base speakers that my brother had from a company called Apogee (now defunct, I think - it's not the same company as the pro audio company that makes first-rate EQs and preamps).

But I used to love getting "tuned-up" and listening to his stereo, ha.

Nice! AKG keeps coming up on my headphones research. How do they compare to other models/brands you've owned?

Besides the K401s, I have two Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones. The Sennheisers are closed ear and tend to get uncomfortable after a while and have lots of bottom end (perhaps, a bit too much). I was using them for several years while learning songs for a couple of bands, but a while ago I started using the AKGS again and find them far more musical with real (unbloated) depth to the bottom end. In the past I had a pair of K240s and then a pair of K340s; both sounded fine in their day but that was so long ago I can't really give a description.
