Are you picky about guitar (bass) stands?

I play gigs (church) where stands are provided. I only like using stands that hang the bass from the headstock as they avoid tangling with the strap and cord. My preference is strong enough I usually hassle with bringing my own even though others are provided. But as I watch and talk with folks around me, I'm the only one who brings one, and the only one who seems to care about this. Others are just sort of "meh". Even when there is a better stand right there, they'll pretty much just use whatever was within arms reach.

What about you? How strong is your preference for one guitar stand style over another?

I've become a fan of the hercules stands when I;'d play out. I've got a single double and triple. At the house I've got probably 10 differwent stands, some are about 40 years old. In a worship ensemble I've got a stand I'd donated. ( I opted for a freebie from sweetwater for that I Had to modify it to keep a jazz bass body from slipping off.

My favorite is one that I like to take to auditions, it's beat beat up rusty 3 guitar stand that I had to hit up a hardware store and a medical supply company to get back to useable condition. If a band is snobbish about the stand I bring to practice, I probably don't want to associate with them.

Regular gig? No stands. Bass is worn or in the bag. Have used them at some of the longer cover sets, sometimes there is a rack elsewhere to store it in, or just back in the bag between sets.

Home I have some Hercules stands for singles and a Warwick 7 bass rack that works well enough. I have an old Ultimate stand, but that thing hasn't aged well. The Hercules seem a lot more stout.
Church has a variety of Hercules (rack or wall hangers) or one site has one of those fold out case stands/boat (don't care for that one).
Practice there is a 7 guitar stand like, but I don't really use it, just pull the bass out and play it.

If I had to have a preference it would the headstock hanging single stands, keeping the center of gravity low and safe.

Is it really such a hassle to bring your own stand? :cautious:

Just like anything else bass related, people like what they like. Whether or not it's important enough to bring your own when a stand is provided is up to them as well.

I like stands similar to this style, yes you can get your strap tangled if you aren't careful. But once you get the hang of how to manage and avoid that I've always found these to be rock solid. The ones I have aren't this brand, just this style. I have a double and 3 singles.

I use mostly standard J basses with the not flat bottom body. I can usually make them work in a stand that has a cradle and the stand I use is of that type, but not all stands are the same or adjusted to maximize my ability to stand my bass in as vertical an orientation as possible when supported by a cradle under the bottom of my J bass. If it leans back in that type stand at all, chances are good it will slip out. That said I use that kind of stand because for some reason the stands I buy seem to grow legs and walk away on a regular basis; especially if it’s the type that hangs the bass by its headstock. That type costs as much as 3 of the cradle type so I spend less on stands that way.
For the longest time I leaned my bass against my 215 cabinet when we took a break and never really had any problem, then then I switched to a 410 and had to start using a stand.

I used Hercules tilt-back stands for years until one day the stand fell forward when I put the bass in. The stand was on a level surface so I don't know why that happened but it was the last time I have used a stand of that type. Bass fell flat on it's face. No bueno, and no way.

I picked up a Starfish stand with the hope that there are more feet on the ground. It is working great so far.
