I'm not politically active at all, I'm fairly sad to say, but my ideals tend to be very liberal and "leftist," if you have to put a term about it.

I really enjoy political discussions in class, seeing as how i'm not old enough to vote. If i had to place myself somewhere it would be pretty far left. My whole view on politics is: If you've got a problem with something, try yourbest to fix it. Otherwise you've got no business complaining. I suppose that could apply to about anything though.
I would definatley say I lean to the left, though I have some conservative views on a few things.
I belong to the extreme left side of politics, politics and books and stuff get on my nerves but I think I know enough and slowly(very)learn more about Marxism-Trotskyism-Leninism. You could call me a communist/marxist/socialist. I have relations with the Spartacist Youth League and other Fourth International groups. But daily its more of a personally idealogy of mine and my comrades, I don't like pushing it too hard to people because it is alienating but I give a good amount of force to where it is known of what I stand for and what I'm down for. I'm not politically active as in events and actions in a big way, but I try to put it in my life-its just really hard for someone who gets irritable with politics to be in them. I know it kind of sounds selfish but at least I'm honest about it. I consider the ideals of right-wing capitalist a great enemy of mine and it's pretty hard to live in it. But I make my own way and try not to bend my ideals to actions alot.
But if everybody believed that, than who would work on local councils and keep things like civic amenities going - who would keep local communities together - it is apathy like this which is bringing society down...
People are all caught up in their selfish desires and aims - what's in it for me - and nobody actualy wants to put anything back into their local community.
Then they go and blame all their problems on the government!
The government should have sorted me out a better job, the government should have made my life better ...etc. etc.How about getting off your behind and making this happen through getting involved in politics rather than moaning about what the "government" are doing?
I have been invited to the Queen's birthday party at the British Embassy in Ankara (owing to the fact that my wife works for them).
I am undecided. Do I refuse to go as a protest (about whatever), or do I go and drink all their scotch and eat al their bits of chees and pineapple chunks on sticks (trying to break them from within)? A great political problem.
As the saying goes, I don't lean to the left or the right. I sag in the middle.
Bruce is right. And the reason our governments can get away with the guff they do is the sheer apathy of the 'politically inactive'.
Aristotle called politics the 'Master science', through which priorities and values are agreed upon in a free society. If you don't do it through democratic politics, you do it through one man telling you (autocracy), a group of people teling you (Oligarchy), 'God' telling you (Theocracy), Old people telling you (Gerontocracy) etc. etc. etc.
Of course, if you aren't interested in the priorities and values of the world you live in, you can always pass the time with your hobbies instead.

I'm not a member of or aligned with any party, but I am quite left biased. I did vote for the LibDems and the Greens (proportional representation (sp?) is used for the Scottish Parliment - I think I understand it), the first because they were the best of a bad bunch locally IMO, and the second (the second vote kinda idea) because that's the party I most agree with, although I don't agree with everything they stand for.
With all the apathy going about (I was the only one in my bunch of friends that voted) the kinda peer pressure is leading to the opinion of "oh, it doesn't matter what I think" but *I* do believe it does. I've seen the results of some of Amnesty International's letter-writing campaigns I've taken part in, and that shows me that I can make a difference. So I try. That's the best I can do.

Something you and I agree on, Bruce. Politics should be (to a greater or lesser extent) an important part of everyone's life. Everyone should take an interest in how their country is run. Or otherwise they should shut up bitching about it.

What I was trying to say is,
"Politics are for people who need hobbies."
Not "Everyone should not care".
Well - would you class an activity that can affect thousands or maybe millions of people's daily lives - as a hobby?
This seems to be trivialising and also implying that taking an interest in how your country (continent or the world) is run, is "optional"...
What's the point (or value)in 'caring', if you don't do anything about it?
I'm anti-stupid. I'm not going to be old enough to vote in the next election, but I'm not sure if I would want to or not, even if I could. I try not to get involved with politics, but I can't help but get mad over certain things the government does, and want to do my part in preventing anything bad.
I suppose anti-stupid is sort of vague....but it best describes what I believe in. Hard to elaborate on without moving into specific issues.
I think people who stick to a party for the sake of siding with that party, are IMO not helping anyone. Voting should be for the good of the country. now I would normally say "that's why I am anti-bush"....but we want to keep this thread clean, so I won't say anything about that sort of thing.

Why can't we all just realize that all politicians have one goal:
Control.
Bush, Gore, who ever... they just want total control of you.
Democrats and republicans have the same goal, they just chose a different path to get there.
Even Ghandi just wanted control... He used the peace method to try and get it... and once he had everyone kissing his toes, he would have magicly became God.
Moral:
Anarchy, Survival of the fittest, and natural selection... oh yes.
