Arguing over sports

Fandom of anything can be seen, by one not into said thing, as a waste of time. Take, for instance, rant threads ( not the ones with obvious intended humor but the ones meant to get a group to raise the pitchforks, grab the torches and attack the monster.

I don't get those.

I got a chuckle out of the "Fire them for wasting Co. time". Maybe they can do their work at the same time? The O.P. seemed able to observe for 45 minutes :D Where I work there is a never ending stream of trash talk on just about everything and we manage to get work done with better than a 98% fulfillment rate as of our last audit by our contractor HP. Sports is chief among our topics with each other being a very close 2nd.

You just knew this would turn into a sports/sports fan-bashing thread.

Does anyone really think that no one argues about music and other subjects just as long and passionately? And there are a couple things that make sports different:

1) The regional aspect (even though one's favorite team could be from across the country or even across the world), and
2) Sports happens in unscripted real time. Ali-Foreman, Villanova-Georgetown, Franz Klammer's breakneck downhill run, the miracle Mets, any number of amazing performances and last-second fantastic finishes across the sports spectrum...

If your beef is with the fanatic, I can see that. But no one is ever going to make me feel embarrassed for being a passionate sports fan.

Ah...but what about the music fans who argue passionately about Beatles vs. Stones, or RHCP vs. Primus, or whoever their favorite bands and artists happen to be, even though they (the fans) don't make music and never have?

I hate those arguments where a team outright lost the game and then the fan or fans of that team argues every excuse why the team wouldn't have lost if (fill in blank) or they had done (fill in blank) when they were at the (fill in blank) point of the game and the other team only won because (fill in blank).

Doesn't matter fanboy!!!!! You're team lost!! End of story!!

Not necessarily true. I occasionally post in the NHL thread in OT because I like hockey. I also played hockey in school and then played for 10 years in amateur mens' league. Sure it's just amateur sports but it kept me in great shape and was a lot of fun.

And for the majority of bass players on TB, it's the same thing. Most will never record an album or go on tour. Only a very few will make enough money to be considered a significant source of income. But music is a worthy craft and it's a lot of fun to play an instrument.

But I'm not one of those obsessive fans who worships their team and gets in to arguments about it. I agree with the OP that it's ridiculous and annoying.

I was never an athlete and I'm not all that much into being a spectator, either. I do follow a little football (just a little) and it's fun to catch another game from time to time by local teams (which means minor leagues up here, baseball or hockey). As far as I'm concerned, sports are entertainment and that's fine, no sillier than any other form of entertainment and the skills of the entertainers can be pretty impressive. I like watching (American) football because there's a certain built-in drama to a well-matched game. Soccer and basketball are much more fun to play, though.

What does baffle me is the seriousness people treat their spectator sports with, as though it WEREN'T a form of entertainment. The "we won" mentality is pervasive and makes absolutely no sense to me. YOU didn't win, all YOU did was sit and watch TV and yell - those guys on the screen won. But cities with championship teams will dump millions of dollars on victory parades, people will riot, all these insane things will happen because of what some professional entertainers did (who often aren't even residents of the town doing the parades and the rioting).
