Double Bass Arnopol 8 Cabinet - A Winner!

... Been lurking and drooling on this thread since it started.

Mike, how do you feel the 88 would compare, in tone, depth and punch to one Bergantino AE112?

I am doing a couple of regular gigs (worship - with 25 - 30 people singing loudly, back at me) in small "boomy" rooms. (with a drummer, piano, an electric guitar and two vocals. My Shuttle 10T just doesn't cut it but a single AE112 does a great job at both locations.

The AE112 weighs 32 lbs. and I have to walk quite a distance to get to these locations. I am thinking that a single 88 would "do the trick" and getting in and out would be more manageable. (I'm an old fart with aching knees and a fragile back :))) Also, I really like the fact that the 88 is higher and takes up less real estate.

Would really appreciate your thoughts.

Hey Bob

I think that the 88 would be competitive with the Berg in volume. I think (know) that it has much better mids and seamless transition to the tweeter. 20 lbs weight. Also, the dispersion will be much better, too. You'll hear yourself better.

In my practice space I have several bass cabs stacked against one wall. Included are Dr. Bass 3-way 12" and 3-way 15" cabs, an EA VL208 and Wizzy 12M, a Polytone 15 combo, and 60s-vintage Ampeg fliptop and Fender Bassman 2x12 cabs. The Crazy8 is almost invisible among them. I connected the crazy8 to my iAmp800, the speaker cable hidden from sight, with the cone at about ear level when seated.

Friends were over the other day (three were musicians, but none were bassists) sitting on the couch, about 12 feet away from the cabs. I asked them to guess which cab I was using. None of 'em guessed correctly. Most thought I was playing through the 3-way 15 - the biggest box.

Guess that's what happens when people listen with their eyes. ;)

Yikes! Now that would be some night ....

Thanks, Mike!

I'm eager to hear how you like the FDeck. Love mine with passive electric basses, but especially with DB.

My FDeck model 2 HPF just arrived. This is the regular HPF, not the prototype. I played the acoustic bass with and without the HPF through the EA Micro and Crazy8. I confess to being a skeptic about whether the HPF would help, but that's mostly because I've never tried one and didn't want to mess with another gadget. Darn it! The HPF makes the rig sound better. Noticeably so in a very musical way. The lows especially are more clear and defined. I swapped it in and out several times and same impression. It will be fun to try this with electric bass too. Good thing the HPF is small; slips right into the gig bag.

Glad you like it! :)

It's a nice knob to twist in a Boomy venue; loose the boom without losing the musicality or native timbre.

Moderators---please let me know if this isn't ok. I've had a lot of requests for pics of the 88 with changes. Different porting and different (and final) grill clips.

Yeah, the port looks huge for the size but because these little 8's can move so much air we need as much as we can comfortably get. It makes a noticeable difference.

Used Mike's Crazy88 (small ports) the other night and liked it a lot. Got good comments from audience members, too. Having used this cab and a Thunderchild 12 on one gig each, it's a tossup for which I like better. Both great cabs.

Nice report, thanks! It sounds like a tone winner, just curious if you had an opinion on Crazy88 volume versus TC112? Perhaps not the right environment to test.

Obviously you have to take what I have to say with a grain of salt "cause I'm affiliated with both. The TC112 goes louder---for comparison I'd compare the TC112 to a 3 x 10 cab and an 88 to a 2 x 10. The 88 is a bit easier to hear ---the mids are very warm and definitely not harsh, but more present than the TC112. And the dispersion through the mids is a bit better. It's really hard to say which is a better upright cab. When I first played the TC with DB---the clouds parted---by far the best upright tone I've gotten. I think I may like the 88 better though. The 88 definitely goes as loud as I'd ever want on DB. So---the TC112 goes a bit louder, but I think the 88 wins (by a small margin) as far as tone. I've been playing double 88's on my loud electric gigs. Perfect for me. Actually I've played a bunch of gigs with an 88 and an 8. Great sound. But double 88's---probably the best sound I've gotten---but also pretty stupid expensive. Except for me---the advantage of having lots of cabs going out---figure I'm doing customers a favor by breaking in their woofers. But seriously---there's nothing like taking a cab on a gig to make sure that there are no problems.

The 88 is a 4 ohm cab. I can put in a switch for 16 ohms in case you want the option. I'm talking with Faital about the possibility of getting 4 or 16 ohm woofers so that for those who'd like I can make an 8 ohm cab. As of right now I don't think that one is available. I'll keep y'all up to date as far as that.

Is there any reason to worry about overpowering an 8 on a loud gig with an 8 and an 88?

Hey !!

First gigs with the Crazy 8 (tweeterless) and my fav Phil Jones D200 head, mostly with piano-drums-bass trio.

I've been trying a lot of speakers : EA Wizzy10, AI Ten2, TC Electronic RS210 & RS112, Ibanez P110C, 8" Genz-Benz etc...
Till now, my best sensations on stage were with TC Electronic cabs.
I can't compare with only memories but the Crazy 8 give me the same feeling : punchy but not muddy bass, smooth treble and no need to overcut middle freq.

Here is my feeling about this Crazy 8 : a gigable 9lbs cab is itself a great news for working bassists like us.
An 8" cab with this quality of sound is a great news.
Those two qualities together is a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat news :D !!

The 8" Genz-Benz was better with the Faital speaker than with the stock speaker but I still had to cut a little around 60Hz (the "lo-bass" freq of the Phil Jones head).
With the Crazy8 (same speaker but more internal volume), I have more bass tolerance at stage volume.

I made also some tests at home and push the volume with my TC RH450 head (P-Bass and upright) --> this little cab really has guts.

The cab is really well manufactured and Mike was great in his communication with me. My only complaint is now that I have a serious GAS about the Crazy88, grmpff :scowl: .....

Thanks to Mike and Greenboy : you guys make the 2012 bassists buzz ;)

Greetings from France !
Jeff

Thanks Mike, extremely informative.

With an 8 and an 88 all 3 of the speakers are seeing the same power. So with any speakers you can over power them but the three 8's go pretty loud. So---the load is equally distributed between the 3 8's. If you're starting to push too hard you'll hear it equally on all 3. The Faital is engineered to go really far before damage.
