While I totally agree with you about a thumb rest of some sort ruining the look, what I’ve found after reacquainting myself with this bass is that my favorite tones come from plucking just in front of where the pickup is located; almost directly above the front edge.

I always anchor my thumb, so it feels awkward trying to stretch from the neck to get there, and anchoring on the pickup itself puts my digits too far back towards the bridge where it’s a thinner sound. Not a bad sound, just not as full or tubby sounding as further up.

I found a black stick on thumb rest on Reverb last night that I’m going to try out. It seems small and unobtrusive. Hopefully it puts me where I want to be.
I've seen long thin TR that extend from the end of the neck to the pickup. Can't remember where, but I believe they are fully reversible. I get it it though. On the P the distance between the end of the neck and the pickup is less, so you can play just forward of the pickup. The distance on the AGB140 is definitely more. I also realize that it isn't a real expensive rare archtop semi-hollow body, but they still look good. I enjoy playing mine with nylon tapes. It is a fun bass to play. You got me thinking about the Barts on this.

I think that I’m finally done messing with this bass 😆 .

-List of changes to my AGB-140:
-Bartolini M34P
-Delano Sonar XPure buffer/booster
-Two .047uF Orange Drop tone caps in parallel
-Push/pull tone pot for active/passive
-Puretone 1/4 stereo jack
-Homemade Les Paul style pickguard
-Oversized maroon knobs
-Block inlay decals
-Copper/White pinstripe decals.
-Stick on “ThumbRocker” thumb rest.

Sounds great, more tonal options than stock, and still an absolute blast to play.

Plus, I think it looks kinda neato.

Hi, I have recently bought an Ibanez AFBV200A, and would like to have it properly protected for travelling.

I know about the Ibanez AFB100C Hardshell Bass Guitar Case and the Thomann Western Guitar Case 12 (which is supposedly also a perfect fit).
I worry, though, that these two might not cut it for airport luggage handling. Please let me know if I'm mistaken on this.

Have any of you AFB(V)200-owning touring musicians found an ABS-case (TSA would be a bonus) for these basses? I have tried to find suitable ABS-cases for both acoustic basses and 12-string ac. guitars, but so far no luck. I'm open to adding some extra padding if the case is a little bit too large.

Thanks!

I have that bass and that case.

That case fits that bass like a glove.

It is not like the case that fits both the AGB-140 and AGB-200 where one case fits both like a glove, but leaves extra room above the headstock when the AGB-200 is in the case.

However, it is your typical good quality hard shell case. It is not a heavy duty flight case.

I’m really having fun playing my AFB 200 these days. I’m using medium scale/ light gauge GHS Precision Flats. I have no amp onstage and only use a little compression and eq straight into the PA and monitors.

Really nice! I'm considering one of these for a big band jazz group. Sure wish I could try one out before buying though - not sure if I'll find the hollowbody to be comfortable. Also the shorter scale might throw me off.

Do these use medium scale strings instead of short scale because of the tailpiece position?

Yes, the tailpiece requires the longer strings.

I figure I should ask here… anyone tried any of the labella strings designed for the mustang on a AGB200?

Labella rolled out a bunch of “stang” strings, but I’d prefer a different platform…

Mac I ended up selling my AFB200. Used the money to get a 5. Now I’m wanting a shortie again lol.

A friend, who has 3 of these, loaned me an AGB140 to mess around with. He had the bridge grounded with an external wire coming out of the f-hole. I guess the internal ground failed. Does anyone know how the bridge is supposed to be grounded. I checked for ground continuity on each bridge insert and non are grounded. I see there is a wire going into a hole in the center block . . . I'm assuming that is supposed to be connected to one of the inserts . . . maybe just by being pinched between the insert and the wood?

Nice basses, these Artcore series. Here's my AFB 200A. A well made guitar that sounds great with a hint of woody semi-hollow goodness. I kinda like the "antique" finish treatment, as well. Orig Ibanez hardcase, too!

I went ahead and installed a strap pin on the upper bout for better ergos. It doesn't get the play time it deserves, but I know if I sell it I'll miss it, and probably never get another one like it.

Hey all! I just picked up an AFB-200 from a local Guitar Center, with a nice hardshell case (no label on the case, but the body fit is snug and with extra space at the headstock which seems consistent with the factory hardshell case option)- all for the price of a used Classic Vibe Squier P-Bass! I rarely search used stuff at GC except in person when I happen to go in one (rare), but I was on the search for a decent weighted-key electric piano and did a search of used inventory for all my local GCs and the Ibanez popped up and I had to go try in person. I had never held one, but always admired them in theory as a longtime Ibanez fan and as full hollowbodies and have been on a casual hunt for a hollow body for my collection (and I've never been fully convinced about the feel of a Hofner though I love the tone). I started playing the AFB at the store and it felt immediately at home in my hands- surprisingly comfortable and without the sloppiness of many cheap short-scales, plus super lightweight and well-balanced. I plugged it in and found some nice fat tones, if a bit limited.

I'm assuming the serial numbers have the first two numbers as the year? That puts mine as a first-year example from 2007. I haven't seen many pictures with the black tuning keys like mine, though haven't looked too hard.

I have looked through much of this thread and saw one person ask at some point if there is an actual difference between the earlier ACHB (I assume standing for "ArtCore Humbucker Bass") pickups in the earlier years and the later (2013-current) "Classic Elite" humbuckers, but the answers didn't really answer the question. I know guitarists have claimed very clear differences between the two, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out the bass ones were just the same pickup rebranded. Any current thoughts from those who have owned basses with both pickups? I suspect someone on here has samples of both?!

Personally I find the stock pickups a little flat/dull sounding given the lively acoustic tone of the instrument. Nearly all of the Youtube demos of AFBs are using basses with the modern Classic Elite pickups and some (like the BasstheWorld demo) seem to have a more nuanced tone palette than mine has. Part of the attraction to hollowbodies for me comes from some "air" in the tone, and these pickups seem to lack much resonant peak to pick that up (I suspect somewhat a result of eddy currents from the metal covers combined with general coil design). I may pick up a set of those old Classic Elite pickups to compare (relatively cheap from China on Ebay), though I also noticed that a Novak H22 Gold-foil pickup I have would fit almost perfectly over the stock plastic pickup rings and even the two height-adjustment holes nearly line up- I know from experience that that pickup has alot more lively character in the upper mids and treble to play with (though quite expensive and not a humbucker!). I will definitely be experimenting soon!

I like the burst AFBs. Mine, as I've said, is transparent black, which is elegant, but the burst finishes look really nice also.

I'd probably do one of each, if I could get a burst, and were I still expanding my 16 bass collection.

Sunbeast, try a few different string sets on yours before you change out the pickups.

Bumping up and checking in, here's my first bass! It's a 2004 AGB-140, with the factory case. I've got a .22 capacitor, some 50k pots on order, and just strung it with Ernie Ball Group III 2806 flats 😎

I love this thing, and the strings (45, 65, 80, 100) are smooth. They're holding tune after about a week of daily use and tuning, and are not difficult to fret at all. I'd say they're really good, but I'm a noob, so maybe they're just really good after all the flatwound hate I read about.

Loads of people love flatwounds. I love how they feel. And they can sound pretty good played solo at home. But every time I’ve used them with a band, they disappear in the mix. ☹️ Unless we’re playing something country or Americana. Which isn’t my normal jam.
