Artists everyone likes that you don't understand

Velvet Underground

Mariah Carey

Justin Beiber

Arrrrrrrgh!

The Velvet Underground listed along side Justin Beaver and Mariah Scarey, is something I don't get. Taste is taste and opinions are opinions. But that's one heckuva difference in musical genres.

Luckily the Velvet Underground existed, as has been said everyone who bought their albums started a band. They gave all of us without the glaring skills and talent or virtuosity the ability to play music in a band without feeling we had to be wunderkinds. We could create based on sound and ideas rather than traditional structures and norms of the music world.

I hate to sound like a complainer, and I'm not trying to bash any of these bands/artists. They're all amazing musicians and most of them were a lot better than me when they were 20 than I am now, after years and years of practice. So there's that.

Simon and Garfunkel. I have nothing against either of them, and I like some of Paul Simon's solo stuff. But the S&G albums, I just don't get it. I guess I just can't relate.

Fleetwood Mac, after Peter Green and Danny Kirwan left. I just don't get it. I respect their musicianship, but unless it's the original lineup, I'm out.

Same with Supertramp. I just can't get into it. Funny thing is, Supertramp is one of those bands that remind me of being a kid, as per that other thread, because I had a baby sitter who loved them and used to crank it up whenever they'd come on the radio. She was really nice, and they were a good, respectable, drama-free band, but I just could never get into it.

Kansas. Awesome musicians and I totally respect it, but what the heck was that about? Twenty minutes of diddly-doodly-deedly-deedly organ music. I will admit that Carry On My Wayward Son is fun to play on the bass, though.

Anthrax. I love old school metal and lots of the thrash stuff, but listening to this band was like having somebody hammer nails into my ears.

I'm happy that other people like this stuff, if it makes them happy. I'll even cover any of these bands without complaint, if it involves money or it's really special to somebody with whom I like playing. They just don't get me up and going.

I stopped listening to pop music some time ago. I just looked at the Billboard Top 100, and I recognize some of the names, and I've maybe heard a song or two by some of them. Everything seems to be about "baby baby", going to the club, and expensive clothing and cars. Apparently you can get rich by doing songs about how rich you are. I wouldn't say I hate all pop music, just bored by most of it.

Country music. Don't get it.
