Where are people getting their replacement G strings? I bought the only remaining factory one, and a set of Aquila Thunderguts, from Large Sound a couple weeks ago.

I buy my Ashbory items from Large Sound. Ashbory-related items are the only merchandise they sell.

P.S. I just noticed they do not have a G-string included in their current inventory. Perhaps it's a temporary stock-out.

I sold mine. I found my Ashbory DeArmond way too high maintenance. The strings dried up all the time and snapped. And the baby powder thing got old. It sounded pretty cool, but it annoyed me too often.

I realize I hadn't provided an update on changing string brands. The Aquila Thundergut strings make a huge difference and I no longer fear the G-string breaking if I look at it wrong.

I just got a used fender to go with my nice ubass. I bought low tension pahoehoe strings as well as e & a Med tension. The low tension are too sticky. The Med tension are perfect. The black strings look great with the blue. Wish it was 20 in scale, but love it. Btw, I tuned it and played for a while. The next day I put the pahoehoe strings on as the silicone g had snapped.

To provide an update, I'm still enjoying my Aquila Thundergut strings. My only wish would be for them to be available in colors other than white.

Glad to know they're still working for you - I have yet to get some myself, but that will soon change. As for the color, in an earlier post I shared how I dyed the original strings to match my blue Ashbory, and I may try that on the Thunderguts one day... that is, if you don't try it first

I actually forgot about that post about dying strings. I might try that. Do you think it would weaken the string's strength?

Have you tried the pahoehoe? I guess I will be trying Aquila strings too as my fretless gold tone micro bass will get here Tuesday.

The only other strings I tried were the original strings installed on my Ashbory and Kala U-Bass SUB SolidBody. The original Kala strings are much stronger than the original Ashbory strings. I'm pretty sure when it comes time to change my Kala strings, I will also change the strings to Aquila Thunderguts.

I'll most likely invest in the Thunderguts sometime before the holidays, so I'll be sure to tell you of my results.

I've tuned BEAD since my first Guild Ashbory.

I guess I'm the only weirdo that likes the original silicone after hearing pahoehoe and thundergut. I feel like I have been very lucky with my G strings and hope mentioning it doesn't jinx me.

I have yet to find a demo of the red oxide silicone to listen to.

I liked the tone of the silicone strings better. I just needed strings that were more durable. I even took precautions, such as tuning the G string down after I finished playing.

Me and the Ashborys are real but posing. As we Rubber Bass players know, rubbery strings don' t give you anything with just one hand, so...

My main is a DeArmond, got a Fender last year as a back up, but have switched their roles. I was afraid Fender might muck it up but they didn't. G strings don't last a week so I haven't had one in a decade, because flipped over lefty the peg is far enough away that the tension required to be at pitch is too much. I recently did a gig where I really wanted that G so I put one on and much to my surprise I wanted to keep it. Of course it snapped the next day. So I decided to move the peg down to where it should be, closer to the nut. Didn't want to ruin my spare with my dubious technique, so, thanks to member funkbass187, I picked up the one that's having the peg moved and letting the fine folks at Brooklyn Lutherie do it.

Have a (lefty) Kala U-Bass. Don't really like it.

And I know it's tied in to the guitarists I watched transfixed playing Cherry Red ES355's at the Fillmore East, but I'd rather play a screwed up red bass than a blue or white one that was playable.
