the weight issue is really a personal one, i think. When I was younger I never realized there was much difference from one bass to another weight-wise. My stingray is probably almost 10 lbs, but it balances perfectly and I've never noticed it feeling overly heavy when i play it. Now my Peavey T-40's... one is probably like 13 and the other 12, those feel heavy. After 2 or 3 hours of rehearsal your shoulder will have a nice dull ache, though when those were my main players my arms, shoulders, and back did bulk up a bit, so maybe there's a positive trade-off in there somewhere.
But realistically, anything under 10 lbs should be playable without much difficulty by the majority of bassists, i'd say. My rick is 9 lbs or so and feels light to me. YMMV, all IMHO, of course.
