Yeah, but the Hipshots are 27:1. I'm not a smart man, but that's way more precise.

a warmoth will likely run you well over $1000 unless you d your own finish. say $1250 or so for a completed bass... or the price of a NEW fender (at 6 month ago prices anyways)
Since we've derailed the thread, I'll throw in my support for Brian at Best Bass Gear. He's been stellar to work with for several personal projects. A perfect match for anything Warmoth doesn't carry!

I checked out Wymore, and his prices are good. However, HD Custom beat him out. For example:
HB2 Hipshot tuners (set of four)
Wymore: $71.80
HB Custom: $56.00

I think EddieG meant that he did order parts from Basspartsresource, to be used with his Warmoth and USA Custom Guitars parts.
I enjoyed the derail. I never get to hear a lot of stories about these parts places (Bass Parts Res, Best Bass Gear, DGuitars, and Guitar Parts Depot). Since I visit these 4 places for price quotes almost daily, I like to know who is there for the buyer and who isn't.
Just an FYI; I found a place on Ebay callled HD Custom Guitar Supply. They have killer prices on tuners and hardware, plus the owner Josh gives prompt replies on questions. I get my stuff either today or tomorrow. I will let you know how everything looks when I get it. Check them out!
I tried to do some price comparisons on gloss maple/rosewood necks:
Allparts, from dguitarparts.com: $170, or $195 with blocks/binding
Warmoth (w/ steel reinforcements): $240, or $440 (!) with blocks/binding. You can do Satin for $10 less or Quartersawn for $100 more.
USACG (w/ graphite reinforcements): $358, no option for blocks/binding. You can do satin for $20 less or quartersawn for $50 more.
So my question is.. is the Warmoth worth $70 more than Allparts? How much weight do the steel bars really add? Is the USACG really nice enough to be worth spending double the price of the Allparts? Should I try to spend less on the body finish and get a more expensive neck?
does anyone have a link for some step-by-step directions to how to drill holes for the pickguard, strap buttons, neck bolts, string retainer, and tuner anchor screws?
I have no idea what kind of drill or bit I would need or how I keep from destroying the new finish.
I had this exact same question yesterday. To fill in holes, you get a dowel rod the same diameter as the bit you're using. Use an exacto knife to cut the finish where you will be drilling. This prevents the finish cracking from the drill bit. Drill, and measure hole depth, cut dowel to size, and tap in with a nail set until flush.
From what I've been told, Allparts necks are the closest in similarity to the actual Fender product. Warmoth has nice necks, but I've been told their necks are thicker.
USACG has great necks, but they don't have the Fender license, so their headstocks look slightly different.
I feel like with an AllParts neck I am going to take it and get a nut cut/installed for it, frets levelled, and have it all setup only to discover that it has some horrible dead spot.
I feel like with the reinforced necks from Warmoth or USACG that there is much less of a chance of this happening. I also feel like they would offer better customer service.. who knows..
The few basses with Warmoth necks I've played weighed a ton. They were nicely finished off and played well but I felt the weight of the neck really detracted from their purpose as a musical instrument.
