Assembling a Warmoth bass?

a warmoth will likely run you well over $1000 unless you d your own finish. say $1250 or so for a completed bass... or the price of a NEW fender (at 6 month ago prices anyways)

I hear that Fender has rolled back some of their price increases due to lack of sales? Why those dumb sh*ts at Fender would have a 2009 price increase is beyond me.

I did a writeup to see what a Warmoth Gecko would cost me. $1,250.00 for 5 string, not including setup.

Hey Joe

I have built several for under $1000. (now mostly just under that). Granted about half of them I finished myself.

Now Warmoth and Schaller both made a price increase (around March, so keep that in mind).

Nothing over the top Alder or Ash with Maple or Paduck/Ebony board. ($550 finished body) Save your yourself $115 if you finish it yourself.

Schaller Hardware just went up but its usually about $120 tuners and bridge.

Pickups and pre (now about $250)

Neck + jack plate, knobs and strap locks. $35

Total = $955

With the parts you want, thats the best part.

Since we've derailed the thread, I'll throw in my support for Brian at Best Bass Gear. He's been stellar to work with for several personal projects. A perfect match for anything Warmoth doesn't carry!

+100

I know Brian and Allison and they are great people.

Just an FYI: you can get some Allparts stuff from them cheaper than it is from the Allparts website just check with them.

I enjoyed the derail. I never get to hear a lot of stories about these parts places (Bass Parts Res, Best Bass Gear, DGuitars, and Guitar Parts Depot). Since I visit these 4 places for price quotes almost daily, I like to know who is there for the buyer and who isn't.
Just an FYI; I found a place on Ebay callled HD Custom Guitar Supply. They have killer prices on tuners and hardware, plus the owner Josh gives prompt replies on questions. I get my stuff either today or tomorrow. I will let you know how everything looks when I get it. Check them out!

Just an update, I got my stuff from HD Custom Guitar. Ordered the parts on Wednesday afternoon, and got them in the mail on Saturday. They look great!

does anyone have a link for some step-by-step directions to how to drill holes for the pickguard, strap buttons, neck bolts, string retainer, and tuner anchor screws?

I have no idea what kind of drill or bit I would need or how I keep from destroying the new finish.

I tried to do some price comparisons on gloss maple/rosewood necks:

Allparts, from dguitarparts.com: $170, or $195 with blocks/binding

Warmoth (w/ steel reinforcements): $240, or $440 (!) with blocks/binding. You can do Satin for $10 less or Quartersawn for $100 more.

USACG (w/ graphite reinforcements): $358, no option for blocks/binding. You can do satin for $20 less or quartersawn for $50 more.

So my question is.. is the Warmoth worth $70 more than Allparts? How much weight do the steel bars really add? Is the USACG really nice enough to be worth spending double the price of the Allparts? Should I try to spend less on the body finish and get a more expensive neck?

From what I've been told, Allparts necks are the closest in similarity to the actual Fender product. Warmoth has nice necks, but I've been told their necks are thicker.
USACG has great necks, but they don't have the Fender license, so their headstocks look slightly different.

I had this exact same question yesterday. To fill in holes, you get a dowel rod the same diameter as the bit you're using. Use an exacto knife to cut the finish where you will be drilling. This prevents the finish cracking from the drill bit. Drill, and measure hole depth, cut dowel to size, and tap in with a nail set until flush.

I will try this in my new refurb P Bass build.

I don't think I need to fill in holes, just drill new ones. From what I can tell, the Warmoth will drill the bridge and neck holes into the body, but that is it. I still need to drill all the other little holes into the finish.

I feel like with an AllParts neck I am going to take it and get a nut cut/installed for it, frets levelled, and have it all setup only to discover that it has some horrible dead spot.

I feel like with the reinforced necks from Warmoth or USACG that there is much less of a chance of this happening. I also feel like they would offer better customer service.. who knows..

I could understand your concern. However, most parts builds I've seen on here involved Warmoth bodies with Allparts necks, so go figure. Shrugging
