I usually don't want the drummer in my house, let alone in my head. Can you imagine the mess he'd make? Beer cans, roaches, and where did all the ladies' underwear come from? Ewwwww.

No beat or count in my head when I play. The tempo and rhythm is not a "thought" when I'm playing – just an instinct. Sometimes my body or head will move with it without my trying, usually on 2 and 4. A "real" straight count would throw me off, actually. The hands down hardest part of reading for me at first was eliminating the count, and learning not to "read" the notes so much as "get" what the sheet music is trying to tell me to do.

I played drums for 10 years before I picked up the bass, so the pocket was already there. All I have to do is figure out the harmonic structure. The rhythm I can pretty much put on auto pilot.
