PointBass pointed me to this thread as I was trying to find info re. my SB301

It's a passive SB301 with P/J SGC pickups, deep transluscent red, the same gotoh black hardware that all the others seem to have

the mystery bit for me is "by Marina" which is stamped on the front of the bass. This is the only Bass Colletion I have seen with this on, but I can't figure out what's special about it...it seems to be a fairly run of the mill edition

Here it is - if anyone finds any more info then let me know!

SB301
By Marina...

surely there has to be someone around who worked for SGC (and/or Nanyo) or worked as a distributor for these? this is why I find it strange that little or no info is available on the net for them

I vaguely remember reading a SB325 review in the uk Bassist magazine (now defunct), but I don't have any old copies....I know Steve Lawson used to write gadget reviews for them, maybe someone like that would be a good source of info...anyone kow any bass magazine journos?!? :)

just thought you'd like to know I'd trawled the net for any references to "by Marina" (and various miss-spellings!)

I only found two references to any Bass Collection bass with this stamped on it and both were SB301

one was a guy on another board that just said he had one, but no contact details unfortunately and the other one is here

the SB301 here is exactly the same as mine, but mine is transluscent red....

still no more info on who "marina" is/was

it's weird because at the time I bought mine (1998/99) I looked at 3 or four second hand bass collection basses in my local area, a couple of 301s and a couple 310s (which was more money than I had) but now they seem to be more scarce

now OK - they aren't AMAZING, but they aren't bad basses at all, should I sell mine or hang on to it....I'm not really playing it at the mo and I'm definitely not a horder! I could use the money to get something different I would play...

As stated by Justice earlier on in this thread, the SX line imported by Rondo is the Bass Collection design, right down to the words on the cavity cover. I looked at this bass in person and it is, as best as I can tell, the same as my former Bass Collection bass (which is now residing in Oregon with my son). It sure seems to be the exact same body design and feel ........

I have an SB335 which I was informed was made in the mid-late 90s (97/98) which is labelled SGC Nanyo built in Japan and Has SGC pickups. This differs to the information that Nanyo went belly up in '91. It has soapbar active humbuckers, 2 band eq and a 24 fret 5 string neck. I'll attach a pic too.

That's a nice looking bass :bassist:

You don't see many of them, especially a 5er. I have an SB310 4 string, thing is very light but incredibly strong. My only problem with it is that the whole bass is too light and smallish for me :bawl: , but they are really well made :D

Yup! That was the one I had! Trip down memory lane...
I loved ALMOST everything about it. When I first bought it in '88, the entire neck was replaced due to the original one having a frozen truss rod. The replacement neck was better but there was a variation in the two tones of red finish. The neck was lighter in color than the body. Not a big deal but a little annoying to look at each and every time I played it.
I eventually sold it in '99 just to try something different.
I ended up buying a Yamaha TRBIIP 6 string!
Cool basses indeed!

Interesting thread this! I've been playing Bass Collection for about 9 or 10 years now. I started out with a black, second hand 4 string. I don't remember which series though... Really liked that one, as it was a serious step up from my very first bass, which was a Sunn Mustang :p

Really like the BC so decided to stick with it, but after about two years (in '99) I thought it was time to switch to a 5-er. Sold the 4-string and went out to buy my SB325, which I still use today.

I was always fond of Bass Collection. I know there nothing spectacular, but still I like 'm. I think they're quiet well built, they're quiet light which is nice and the neck just plays soooo sweetly and fast.

When I first got an internet-connection I tried to find out more about the brand, but couldn't find much. Only last week I found this board and with this thread I learned quiet a lot. It certainly made fascinating read! I'm kinda jealous about Aquanova having a catalogue. I'd like to read through that someday :p

Anyways, thanx on the info, and here are some pic's of my SB325.
