Started at 16 but didn't get serious till I was 19, in 1971, when Jeff Beck's 'Rough And Ready' album came out. ... Clive Chapman is brilliant on that one.

Late bloomer. Started at 53 (December of 2017) but played guitar for 27 years before.

age 15. bass player in our garage band wanted to be the frontman singer. I switched from rhythm guitar to self-taught (Mel Bay books) bass. That was 1964.

Started at 13 and all these decades later , could not imagine life without it . I would not have a lot of the things I have now without playing music ....the people I have met , the travel (just back from 2 weeks in Europe ) and a healthy income from a guy who doesn't stand out in a crowd .

Took formal lessons for 1 1/2 years.
Played in “organized” groups through school as well as weekend warrior bands.
I will turn 63 next month-still playing, though gigging less.
My 2 cents to new players- learn to read standard notation.

I was 50 years old. The bass was my first stringed instrument ever. My son wanted to play guitar, so I bought him one. A week later I went back to the store to buy a bass. I've been playing keyboard from my 6th.

I got my first bass at 12, played till I was around 16, then put it down and sang full time. I picked the bass back up at 36 and have been playing ever since.

16. I discovered Jane’s Addiction, Fugazi and a wave of early grunge…then I discovered the Guild Pilot tucked away in a closet of my high school band room.
