Atkinson basses new website and model

Dan, the website is really well done. The new pic's of the Evoke series look like really great instruments. USACG's seem to be a solid group of cats very foccused on quality wood selection and top-notch CNC work. I have talked to Tony before and he seems very customer oriented. So I am wrestling with selling my Sadowsky NYC and checking out one of yours. Either way I am sure your orders are going to start picking up.

Ok, so...as many of you know, I stopped taking custom orders 2 months ago. But I've been flooded with requests to change my mind. So I finally caved. :p

I've gone through so many different "business models" in the past year, trying to find the right fit for me, my lifestyle, and customers. I hope my new method is the answer, once and for all.

I'm making several changes. First, I'm sourcing bodies & necks only from USACG. Their stuff rocks. Allparts is good, but I did see more fluctuation in quality with them. And the USACG necks are simply awesome. :bassist:

Second, I'm outsourcing my nitro finishing to Knappster Finishes, a shop recommended to me by Tommy at USACG. I asked him who did the best nitro work and he said Marty Knapp before I could finish my sentence. I've sent 3 basses to him and his work truly is amazing. Plus, he does custom colors that I could never dream of doing.

(To be honest, I always hated doing the finish work. It was not fun and the wife hated the smell. And while I thought my finishes looked pretty good, I always wanted to "take things up a notch".)

Also, I'm offering Nordstrand pickups as standard. And I'm no longer accepting returns, but still cover any defects under warranty as always.

So, this means my custom jobs are a step up from previous builds, and I get to spend more time doing what I like (obsessing over assembly and playability). The only downside is that pricing goes up a bit, but is still very affordable for what you get, IMO.

Glad to hear your taking orders again Dan. Hope you can balance the business with insane customer demands, and still get some enjoyment out of it.

Q: Now that you're outsourcing finishes... do you still offer relic-ing?

Well, for a truly authentic relic you'd want the hardware aged. Unfortunately the best way (that I've found) to achieve the look is to use muriatic acid. It's nasty stuff, and I always hated dealing with it. So I got rid of it.

So I could relic the finish, but it would only look authentic if the relicing was kept to a minimum.

However, as pretty as the Knappster finishes are, it would kill me to take a chisel to one. Here's an example:
