Atkinson basses new website and model

Dan, I would recommend being very careful with the wording on the site about putting your necks and bodies together, seeing as how Fender is paying more attention to you now. This information "You can order a RETRO neck along with a RETRO body, and it will certainly fit that body, but it is not intended for that use...as such, I cannot ship the neck and body attached." should maybe be delegated to the FAQ section. In its place you could put "for more information, please visit the FAQ section" and provide a link.

Yeah, Fender's legal eagles will never think of following that link. ;)

As it so happens, I have a beat up jazz bass that needs total body replacement but the neck is fine, oh, and I have a pretty good jazz where the body is fine but the neck is just terrible. I would need a replacement body for the one, and a replacement neck for the other.

And no, can't just put the good neck on the good body....that's crazy talk....

I ask for no sympathy.

Like I said, I knew exactly what I was doing. So do all the other builders, like Bill Nash, who do the same.

99% of us drive over the speed limit by 5-10mph on a regular basis. We knowingly break the law. Why? Because we assume those who enforce the law won't mind something so insignificant.

So I read the advice, considered it, and decided to continue offering my basses anyway. My hope was that if Fender were to ever get serious about this stuff they would pay more attention to guys like Bill Nash, who cranks out 100 guitars & basses per month, as opposed to my tiny operation making 1-2 basses per month.

Why did I decide to take the risk? Because it's a fun hobby, and I honestly believe that bassists should be able to buy a good, solid, workhorse custom bass that doesn't cost as much as a car. I've never made a ton of profit on my builds. On some, I have actually lost money.

But apparently I was wrong. Fender did come after me, not Bill Nash. My hunch is they never will. I know the reason - Bill probably has enough cash and enough incentive to fight Fender in court, whereas I don't. So Fender intentionally turns a blind eye to him and comes after guys like me. Do I went a sympathy card? No. That's the risk I took. Do I have a right to be irked? I think I do.

Bill's business model is different than mine. I only do custom orders. Someone contacts me, tells me what color they want and what hardware, and I make it happen. Essentially, my customers are buying a complete kit from AllParts, and paying me a few bucks to assemble it for them.

But Bill Nash doesn't do custom orders. He has a staff that cranks out Strats, Teles, J's and P's all day long. They are built for the purpose of retail sale, either over the internet or in music stores. If I was Fender, that business model would piss me off much more.

So let's compare Nash and me. Nash makes 100+ instruments per month, charges around $1600 for them, and sells them retail.

I make 1-2 instruments per month, charge around $900 for them, and do custom order only.

But I'm the guy Fender comes after. :rollno:

I don't want to sound like I'm beating up Nash. He makes great stuff, and I'm glad he does what he does. I've owned a Nash bass, and it was great. I think I posted a glowing review on it here at TB. My point is strictly to vent. That's it. I'm annoyed by this whole thing. I think I have a right to be.

Rant over! :smug:

Getting annoyed for being busted doing something you knew wasn't kosher?

You admit you knew the risks.

if you stick your finger in a hornets nest after multiple people advised you against it, (and they certainly did) and you get stung.....

well...

are you really going to be annoyed that you got stung? Even if the kid down the block has manged to not get stung doing the same thing?

So if a Ferrari goes flying by a cop doing 100, and then he ignores them and pulls you over doing 10 over... You're not going to be annoyed by that, right? Please.

If I was doing something wrong by speeding, and got caught, I guess I really shouldn't complain now should I? Of course if I was following the rules, and doing the right thing, I wouldn't have been busted in the first place. ;)

... and you don't think the cop radioed ahead about the Ferrari??

That thing ain't as fast as Motorola.

I'm sure Fenders legal team has contacted others that are violating their trademark as well as Dan. I seriously doubt Fender is just "picking on" him.

Someone elses bad behavior should NEVER be an excuse for your own bad behavior.

EDIT TO ADD: I think I'd be eating humble pie, more than being annoyed after I was warned repeatedly that I better watch my speed in this town as The local PD is widely known for cracking down on speeders! ;)

There is that.

Yeah, but you would though... So I don't know why you're pretending that you're perfect. Or maybe you really do think you're perfect? Wow, must be nice to be perfect.

After being warned numerous times by pro builders and others in a thread a year ago ??? (linked earlier in this thread)

Nope, probably not. I'm FAR from perfect, but I'll tell ya this much....

If I were warned repeatedly, then rolled the dice and got bit in the butt, I doubt I'd be whining about it publicly. ;)

I think I'd be eating a slice of humble pie ... in private.

You were warned quite a few times that this could happen.

Ms Gump would have something to say about the wisdom of ignoring those warnings.

For some reason you seem to want to start arguments with me. I'm not sure why.

If you read my posts above, I clearly state, openly, that I completely understood the risk I was taking. I then stated that I'm simply venting, as any reasonable human would. I'm venting because what I hoped wouldn't happen indeed did happen. Fender made me a target instead of those who truly deserve it.

The speeding ticket analogy is valid. Do you expect us to believe that you wouldn't mind if a cop gave you a ticket for doing 60 in a 55, if meanwhile there was a pack of 50 sports cars flying by doing 180 mph, and the cop didn't care?

C'mon, man. Have some intellectual honesty.

You are a better man than I, savit260. I am awed at your perfection.

Momma Gump said a lot...which one would it be?

"You have to do the best with what God gave you."

"Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."

"Dying is a part of life"

"Stupid is as stupid does."

"You're gonna have to figure that out for yourself."

"What's normal anyways?"
