When I reviewed Dan's 70s style Jbass I knew that he had "arrived" as a builder. It seems from his latest endevours that he has arrived and left again, to go to another planet! Outstanding new builds Dan. I just love to see someone so passionate that it reflects in the work. Keep em coming Dan. I was sad to not be able to keep that 70s Jazz. Something that I intend to remedy in 2012;)

David, I'm almost jealous of your black hardware. I originally told him to put black on, but since I wanted the chrome pickup/bridge covers, I figure it would look better to stay all chrome.

Now, the real question is, DID IT ARRIVE YET?

I want to know if the owner of that new Blue Burst Pea is on here!

Ugh, thought I posted. Yes it has arrived and she sounds amazing. Easily the best playing bass I've owned (and this includes my Czech MTD and my American Roscoe as well as several Lakland Skylines). This bass will punk any Fender I've ever owned/played and I believe would measure up to a Sadowsky just fine. The Nordy pickups sound great and without a doubt, I will NEVER again use any other preamp that is not a Nordy. It is the most musical preamp I've ever heard and it's impossible to get a bad setting on it. To the point that I may be swapping my Aggie preamp on my other j bass for a Nordy since I like it (the Nordy) that much.

Well, the vision was all yours...I just did the dirty work. :p

Glad you dig it. It was the most "boutique" build I've done so far. And yes, that Nordy pre with those pickups is a dreamy combination.

Dan - I was originally planning on buying all the stuff and doing the work myself, but I was a bit leery of my first build being on such amazingly nice wood. My wife also said "I plan on being out of the house the day you put that together" so with your very reasonable costs it was a no-brainer for me to have you do the work and have a warranty to boot. And I doubt I could have done as nice a job as you did. Unfortunately that only gave me extreme GAS for another bass just like it. Oh and also a fretless. Arggh!!

The first quote sums up exactly how I feel about my Atkinson. I'd love to try yours out someday. It's amazing seeing the different work Dan does.

The second quote sums up exactly how I felt the minute I took mine out of the case. I plucked one note and said, "Oh, yeah! I'll be ordering from Dan again!"

My next bass will be a fretless and I'm really leaning towards Dan. There are a few other luthiers I wouldn't mind checking out, but I wouldn't complain if I had an entire arsenal of basses made by Dan. If I get Dan to build me a fretless this year, it'll definitely have the same electronics as yours. You really can't go wrong with Nordstrand!

Completely jealous of your Atkinson. If you ever see a similar-looking bass (not the EXACT same) without frets, it might be mine ;). I could sit here and write down specs for another 10 basses I want Dan to build for me. I think I might have to try for a secret weapon someday. Three pickups. Jazz, Precision, Jazz. Active/Passive. I'm drooling already.

Damn, that's nice! For that price, I'm not surprised it sold within three days. Whoever buys it better be posting in here. We seem to be a small club, but we all know how beautiful these basses are.

I hope to get a fretless from Dan this year or next. Wouldn't mind getting a fiver with the Nordy combo like David's either! I could easily own four or five of these basses. :smug:

I'm finally getting the fix for my 'jazz jones'. ;) I've been eyeing options on the new and used market for months. I ended up talking to Dan and have a cool Jay spec'd out. It truly is a luxury to be able to specify weight! Basic specs: transparent white over two-piece ash body, rosewood board w/white dots, tort guard, Hipshot lollipop tuners & type A bridge, and a pair of those nice Nordstrand jazz pickups. Now I can drop off to sleep more quickly at night - I won't be pondering jazz bass options...:cool:

So it's been roughly a year and a half since I received my Atkinson Pea, and I wanted to share my experience thus far:

To make a long story short, my Atkinson is simply the best bass I have ever owned or played, period. The sound is excellent, its feel is perfect, it plays like a dream, and its looks get better by the day. It's perfectly balanced and is by far the lightest bass I've ever owned. Here are some examples of what a year and a half of consistent gigging has done for the Atkinson's mojo:

Note the subtle checking on the body and the discoloration on the back of the neck. Beautiful! So I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with my Atkinson, and I eagerly await the years of fun to come!
