I had this with my Ampeg cabs back in the 90s. I thought something must be wrong, or about to burst into flames, when I saw flashes of light coming out of my front ported cabs! I opened one up expecting to see a damaged component but was pleasantly surprised to see a lightbulb, which I then realised was a design element rather than a fault.

i think i first saw this "light bulb as horn limiter" idea in the old community sound PA stuff from the '90s, where the bulb was positioned to be visible through the front; that way the soundguy could see the bulbs lighting up and realize he was pushing the PA cabs too hard

There were home stereo speakers that were set up so you could see that bulb lighting up through the cloth surround of the woofer... My cousin had a set of speakers that did it - freaked him out when it happened because he thought the speakers were on fire Never mind the fact that we all had our fingers in our ears because the tweeters were intolerably loud at that point.
