Audere major hiss

Not knowing the installation procedure, I don't know why you would have to ground the pole pieces, as there is a ground wire that comes off them. But if the pole piece only moved a tiny bit, it may be alright. Electronics are a funny thing though, and pickups use very fine wire. You may end up having to have the pickup's resistance checked to make sure the ohm output figure is still the same as when new, and to make sure there isn't a short in it.

As suggested earlier, you might want to take your bass to a professional, and have him figure out where the problem is. Something is not right, and you probably don't have the equipment or experience to do a diagnostic check. I would certainly like to know what the problem was when found...

the polepieces buzz when touched, there was no grounding wire to them, so I had to make one with conductive tape and a ground wire. I will check the resistance when I have the pickups out of the bass again.

BTW I was a physics major, then went to business school, and I now work as a systems administrator, so I remember a thing or two about electricity ;)

Glad to hear you're not a newbie to this kind of thing! I've given you all I know about what to do at this point, so good luck, and I'll stay subscribed to read the final outcome...

Aloha,
Ian

I'm about to order an audere classic 4 band, would you guys say that this hum is too much for on stage? I will be running it through 2 EMG-TW pickups

I had a recording session with a band this weekend and it was no problem when all the other instruments chime in. But when I was playing solo we had to do some eq tweaking like turning down certain frequencies.

Did you ever hear of someone having these issues with the JZ jazz plates? All the audio files I could find were fine. I would be surprised if the problem is limited to the 3ZB models.:hmm:

OK, replaced the Aero pickups with the Nordtrand NJ4SV, there is much less hiss, I am very pleased to report. I can now almost crank the treble and get the same hiss as I had with the Aeros with the treble flat! The setup is as quiet as my other Jazz with the active EMGs, which is the standard for quiet active preamps for me.

Somebody warned me about the Aero type I and active preamps and I did not listen :hmm: The Aeros are very good in a passive setup and will go in my MIA Jazz!

Quote from bassclef 112

Regarding them, I just wanted to mention a conversation I had with Larry Pollack back in 2003 when I bought a set of J Type I's direct. I told him I was going to use them with a J-Retro and he actually discouraged me from doing it. He told me that they were designed to sound best as passive pickups, no preamp and he was quite clear in his description of added impedances, no true bypass etc.
Well, I went ahead and used them with the pre anyway and they sounded....okay. I never really got behind the way they came across. So I took out the pre and never looked back. Those pickups just blossomed into what they were obviously meant to be and i wouldn't have them any other way.

Great! :) Is there any difference in output? Would you mind measuring the DC resistance of the Aero and Nordstrand Pickup for me?

no difference in output, they are about the same. Sorry already soldered and shrinkwrapped the Nordstrands to the Audere preamp. The Aeros are
8K for the neck pickup
9K for the bridge.

I am sure somebody has the values for the NJ4SV, I just wished I had recorded the resistance before hooking them up

Your setup is nearly identical to mine: NJ4SVs through a 4-band Audere on a Warmoth Jazz. Different woods though.

I've still got more hiss through my setup than I'd like, which I might have time to address this summer. I absolutely love the tone though!

I did not have the hiss that some of you are describing at all on my JZ-3 unit. I hope you guys get it worked out....these preamps sound stunning.
I recently installed the JZ-3 on my Squire VM Jazz Bass fretless and have very minimal hiss.No more than before actually. This may be a stupid question, but are these preamps that folks are having a problem with being installed into basses with active PUPs? The Z-Mode will only work on passives due to the semi-conductor present in active PUPs. I am not a real big electrician by any means, but I thought I should point that out.Sorry if it seems to be a stupid query!

no it's not stupid, but I'm pretty sure everybody here knows the difference between active pickups and passive ones so far :) and you can add caps to the classic 4 band preamp to make it work with active pickups anyway.

So far for me, less hiss with the NJ4SV, but still not quiet like a passive Jazz or an EMG setup. I do like having active eq at my fingertips, but you know, my passive Jazzes are so damn quiet, that I may get rid of the preamp
It's not a problem live, but in the recording studio the sound guy looks at you weird when you bring hiss to his board :hmm:
I may ultimately try the nordstrands with different preamps and choose the one: Aggies are out already, they do not hiss as bad, but the preamp is far from musical to my ears, need to try Bartolini (as suggested by bongo) and maybe the ACG filter based preamp? need some cash flow first. As always I will keep you guys posted.

cool bass man, I agree you need to get rid of that roller string tee, it sucks, I bought it too when I got the neck from Warmoth, I looked at it and almost threw it away, it is weak and the wrong size. I replaced mine with a Hipshot 3 string, it is great.
Let me ask you: did you use copper foil or shielding paint in the control cavity? I used paint and it could be that the grounding is not as good as using foil due to the minute amount of resistance of the graphite paint

My final update on this, the Audere seems to be fine and it's not noisy. It's as quiet as my Warwick with Seymour Duncan AJB-5 active pickups and STC-3A electronics, which I I think is very quiet.
The SNR is bad because the PU itself has very little output, but this is not the preamp's fault. It doesn't alter the output level of the PU's at all. I think it's a great preamp soundwise and there shouldn't be any problems with medium/hot pickups.

Had a JZ3D installed in a KSD Proto 705J. Mine hissed even with the volume off. I call Audere and he said that was somewhat normal. So maybe it's just certain pickups. Iknow there are people who don't think much of the KSD but I see one person instakked them w/Aero pups and the same problem so....Oh well. Nice pre if you can get rid of the hiss!

Just received my audere JZ3 today and was stuck with an awful hum after installation in my DJ5. Checked my work 3 times and still no clue. Was ready to give up and on a whim, tried switching the bridge com and bridge hot, and --boom, dead quiet, all controls operating as advertised.

Mix up in wiring at lakland? Thoughts?

Bob, that's exactly it. It happened in both DJs that I installed the Audere in. The hot is black in one of the pickups. All of them are like that, to my knowledge.
