Audere noise cancelling preamp-single coils without the hum

Thanks for the encouraging comments Snax! Hope to finish her up this weekend. My wife is out of town, so I've had time to chip away at it during the week. When my wife is away the most exciting thing I can come up with to do is build guitars and eat mass quantities of foods she would not approve of.

You said you were kidding about passive but I'll answer anyway. I have one Audere bass with an active/passive switch and, as advertised, it sounds identical to active mode (assuming tone controls are at noon) in all respects. That was enough to convince me and it also gives me one bass that I can gig with with no dead battery concerns. I also have one other bass with the noiseless system and insisted on having NC bypass mode. There again, as advertised, the phantom coils do not result in hum or coloration, even when an odd number of coils are operating. So after those trials, I no longer feel compelled to have passive mode or NC bypass. In addition, the incremental wiring would have been so significant on this one that it may not have fit into the cavity.

What did you mean by this comment?

The standard Audere preamps will not do anything about hum, but this thread is about the NC system which uses phantom coils kinda like some Alembics except that the coil and circuitry is miniaturized so that it fits in the control cavity. I think Alembic used a full size dummy coil in the middle pickup slot.

Audere's NC system will give you humbucker quiet with single coil tone. I was a skeptic (as I am about all things) but it really works as advertised. I'm hopeful it will really catch on because I want it to still be available 10 years from now.

You are right about shielding - always a good practice in any guitar, but it won't eliminate single coil hum.

Finished up my other custom NC bass today. Turned out awesome. No hum in all 63 pickup combinations!

Isn't 63 possible pickup combinations somewhat limiting? A P-bass offers more versatility than that....

THAT is why I have a P bass too.

Actually the whole lineup has Audere preamps. The ones on the ends are noiseless and the two in the middle are Pro-Z with noiseless pickups.

Our latest charity project is a Telecaster guitar, but I had to post here to give a shout out to David Meadows at Audere for making us a custom noise cancellation rig that is optimized for use in this guitar. Can't wait to hook it up. Wiring in a bypass is pretty complicated but we figured it was very important considering how suspicious six string players can be about electronics.

Inspired by the Intel Inside stickers we wanted to give credit to an invisible but great part of the tone in the basses we build so we had Audere Inside stickers made. Not sure if it looks better in the middle or the corner of the cavity cover....
