Audere Preamps????

Just wanted to let folks know that I just got a stacked volume/tone pot from David to work with the active preamp. It sounds great. So, the option for a tone knob with the active preamp is there now.

Here are two quick sound clips using my F Bass BN6 with an ebony board. The first is just the bridge pickup and the second is just the neck pickup. Both are with the tone fully up and then the tone fully back. The bass was boosted very slightly on both clips as well. Not sure if this will be the final choice that David uses but it sounds great so far.

Here's two more sound clips but in low z mode. Very, very cool. Like I told David, I'd love to hear a P bass in low z with the tone rolled back. That would be a devastating! I really love the sound of low z with the bridge pickup and the tone rolled back. Great sound.

emjazz, thanks for making those soundclips! I will be receiving my FBB Custom shortly, and it has the treble rolloff, and a P in the neck position, so I imagine there will soon be some low rumbling noises around the house...

I may just grant that wish, Andy. I'm considering throwing one of these in my Lull P/J to make it the ultimate hotrod.

BTW, I love the neck pickup tone on your F-bass! What a sound. Born under a bad sign in the best possible sense.

Nice sound Andy. But... I always put the FBass preamps at the very top of my list.... wonderful transparency, the best, most usable mid control in the business, a great passive tone control.... I'm surprised you felt you needed to swap it out. I absolutely loved that preamp.

The only reason I'm not playing an FBass today is based on the way the bass is positioned when played standing... I never could get used to that big body hanging way to the right. Pure personal preference though.... great basses. However, I think I would have stuck with George's preamp.

I never dreamed of swapping it out but the difference was astounding. The F Bass pre was adding a compression that I didn't even know was there. It became apparent when I put the Audere in. All of a sudden the bass became more dynamic and clearer. The Audere also allows many, many more usable sounds than the F pre does. That's not to say I don't like the F pre, it's great, but it can't begin to do what the Audere does, especially the 4 band pre that I have. I certainly wouldn't be unhappy with the F Bass preamp again, I really like that preamp. It's that the Audere's eq points seem to really fill in some of the holes that the bass has, especially in the low mids. Remember, I have an ebony board and it reacts and sounds differently than the maple board F's. Anyway, just my 2 cents from first hand experience.

That makes sense, and it's all personal taste once you get to the FBass/Audere level anyway

I know the vast majority of fretted FBass's are shipped with maple boards. I'm one who doesn't think a board swap, especially between Ebony and Maple, will make a huge difference in the sound... but there are so many interactive variables that it might make a significant difference on an FBass.
