I'm looking for a nice audio interface around 400 bucks. I want to record bass, guitar, keyboard, vocals etc. and I want to use software in the future (I'm gertting a Macbook soon). What would you say is my best bet?

Any used firewire unit off of ebay. In particular, a Presonus Firepod. If you already have the mic preamps (ie: if you already have a mixer), a MOTU 828.
I think the m-audio FW1814 is a pretty good value and allows you to use protools (m-powered) or any other DAW app out there. It also has plenty of room for expansion/improvement with MIDI, wordclock, ADAT and S/PDIF connections. A buddy of mine picked one up new for $358 shipped last year off of Ebay. Only has 2 mic pres though which may or may not be an issue for you.
There are some newer interfaces out there that seem to be getting good reviews/results around or just over your price range... as previously mentioned, the Presonus Firepod.
Which software recording app are you planning on using? Many don't seem to include mac software.
