Double Bass Audio Sprockets ToneDexter

I updated mine today and made two new wav maps and stored them next to my favorite from the previous update. Before I preferred the wavs created in slot 22, but this time I am liking the wav I created in slot 3 over both the previous favorite in slot 1 and the slot 22 created one. The slot 22 created one had more bass and more volume than the one created in one of the other slots which in my music room was too much. I have a couple gigs I will be able try out the different wavs in a live setting. I might have different preference there.

I realized that the mic(rode nt5) is distorting quite heavily while training. Anyone experienced the same? Is there a fix?will this affect the wav? I'm quite happy with the results but there's something about the high frequencies that sound strange(maybe because of the distorted mic?) Also, the wavs made while playing pizz sounds very strange, like a short reverb coming and going with each note. The Arco ones sound nice though(except the higher frequencies). Any ideas?

The mic input has fixed gain and if the mic is too hot or too close, this is what happens. It doesn't always ruin the WaveMap, but if severe enough it will compromise it.

From your description, most likely the mic is too hot. Either back it away from the instrument or pad it down. If it has an on board pad, use that. If not, an external 10-15dB pad would work.

Not at all. The outputs and the effects return are disabled during training.

Thanks, James!

Another question: I have a stand for my bass and I had my mic on a stand as well. Other than switching the slot for training there was no difference on the setup for training two new wav files. There is a noticeable difference in volume between the slot 22 and the slot 3 wavs. The slot 22 is much louder and much more bassy. I am not surprised by the bass increase, but the volume is a bit of a surprise. Is this normal for training in slot 22 now?

Thank you very much, I'll try the pad.

I guess the volume will be almost the same if you set the low cut to -5 or -6 db on the slot 22 WM. It´s mostly the boom that makes the slot22 WM seem to have more volume. When we talk about comparing slot 22 WM to regular WM, my impression is that the regular slot WMs are thinner, but the boom is taken out more selectivly compared to a slot 22 WM with the low cut engaged. The advantage of slot 22 plus low cut is that you can choose how much you like to cut, depending on the room etc.

We’re out on the road right now. I updated the firmware and made two new WMs onstage at a venue. I grabbed the KSM137 that was on the hat, and moved it over to my bass.

Quick and dirty, trained arco on slot 5 and the other on 22. Instantly, new fav. The box just keeps getting better. I hope to make some more and fiddle with mic placement as we go.

This is a fascinating thread and I’m just about ready to jump in. How do I tell if the unit has the new 10M ohm input option? I seen several for sale on Reverb and want to get the latest revision. Thanks

If the serial number is #1000 or higher, it has the 10Mohm option feature.

I think I know this answer, but wanted to bounce it off the group. My bass has a Blastcult wing pickup on the bass side, which I'm very happy with, but the notes on the G string don't project quite as well as the other 3 through the pickup. Probably 4 to 6 dB lower on the G. Acoustically the G projects great with good balance, and is one of the reasons I bought the bass. Can the mic WM help with the string balance through the amp?

I would say that yes the WM can help even things out, but might not be able to totally make up for that amount of difference. Have you tried putting the wing pickup on the treble side? I would try that. I should add that in our limited experience with using pickups in both wings, we have found that there sometimes can be phase issues that make that approach not a good one. So I won't suggest it.

This pickup has a tension screw for the element in the bridge and can't be moved. I have tried pickups on the treble side, but that has compromised the bass output, at least on my instrument. I do have a Full Circle that I will experiment with also. Maybe that on the treble side mixed with the WM is the ticket! The ability to have something beyond the normal piezo element tone (= tons of EQ live) is just incredible. Thanks for the cool product and the great updates! @James May

Does that happen also without using the Tone Dexter directly going into the amp?
I once had this problem too and needed two-element-pickups at that time. After a repositioning of the sound post (more away/south of the bridge) single element pickups worked without a problem and bowing was sounding nicer too.

I don’t have a TD, yet! And I’ve also had multi element pickups near the strings (Rick Turner) that solved the string balance issue, but introduced other issues also. Mainly bass guitar like dynamics and tone. I think with enough trial and error I’ll make some progress with the TD. Regardless, this box will feed gear head tone engineer section of my brain very much :D
