AudioKinesis 1x12 Cab Part Two

I tried the TC112AF I have at hand with a GK 112Neo-II, and it was not a good match at all.
I feel it might pari with my LDS 2x8+5 but haven't tried it yet.

The TC has such a nice, pure voice, I'm fairly against matching it with something else, just on principle. I wonder if Duke couldn't build a 112 extension with no horn to add a little more throw and beef when TC112 users need some extra grunt...

I would advise against it. IME/IMHO, the TC112 is designed to be used as a stand alone unit, and I think there is more to be lost than there is to be gained if you pair it up with a different cab.

+1 And an extension cab without horn wouldn't really work either, since that cab would have to be lo passed, and would, in addition, 'unbalance' the ratio of the wonderful horn to the woofers.

It is easy to spend other people's money, of course. But if I dug the TC112 and on occasion needed a few more DB, I'd save my pennies for the TC115 to use in those situations.:D

In general I agree. However, biamping to a dedicated subwoofer actually works pretty well IME...;)

Yes, I can see where that would address some of my concerns about taking away the balance and magic in the mids/highs.

+1, although I sure wouldn't be interested in extending the low end of the TC112. It would still 'change the nature of the beast' IMO. Of course, that could be a good or a bad thing depending on tone goals.

If you have a high quality playback system, this clip will give you a pretty good feel for the low end of this cab.

Ken, thanks so much for putting those videos up. They are excellent! Very helpful.

I have a TC12 (AF) on order, and I was wondering what "bigger" cabinet I should get for those situations requiring more. But your comparison vid of the TC12 and the AE212 changed my mind about even getting another cabinet! I wouldn't get something bigger than a 2x12 (I just sold my HT322, not going back down that road), and I did not see a huge difference in output between the two cabs (although the AE212 did sound a bit bigger as you mentioned).

Agreed. The one potential benefit I was interested in was getting the horn nearer my ears without losing any of the other goodness. I figured that the TC was only a couple of pounds heavier than one of the top boxes from my DIY 3-way cabs, so why not try it? But IMHO the tweeter might run out of gas pretty quickly if you ask it to keep up with any more lows and low mids than the 12 already deals out.

Hey, if I had all the wizbang toys you have, I'd be trying all that stuff too!

Thanks! The AE212 will eventually overtake the little TC112, but you are talking 'really loud' situations. It again is suprising how 'non compressed' this cab sounds when pushed to moderately loud volumes!

The closest thing I've heard regarding volume performance and true low end in a box anywhere near this small is the Bergantino HT112ER (which weighs quite a bit more).

The TC 112 is tuned moderately high (in the ~50hz range, IIRC). With drop tuned basses, especially longer scaled basses, you could extend the usable volume quite a bit with a fEarful 15Sub for example.

Cross in right above the saddle range above the tuning frequency and you'll allow the system to be hit with probably a pretty constant 500 watts or so above the crossover point (and ungodly amounts under 80-90hz or so).

Similarly, if your sound is bass/low mid heavy, using the stock GB crossover low pass on a fEarful 15 or 12 sub would probably add a lot of heft to your sound without running the horn out of gas except in the mid-midrange (1khz to 2khz or so)

The horn Duke uses is SO sensitive that with the padding it's got you should have just reams of headroom north of 2khz or so. It's probably padded back in the neighborhood of 8-10db.

Anyway, I haven't tried it, but I would suspect that a stock fEarful sub with the low pass board would be a about the best of any cab you could match with the TC (other than possibly a dedicated sub with an active crossover).

* probably 9/10 players out there, the money frequencies are from 80 to 800hz, which is exactly where a 12 or 15sub would add to your sound.

It is the padding that would cause the mismatch with the horn. Unless you could change that, this would not be optimal IMO. I agree, if Duke felt like it, he could put a 'one cab/two cab' pad switch on the cab, and this would probably be fine.

However, that is not really the design goal Duke had with this cab. He wanted it to be the smallest box with the 'best' specs for stand-alone use by players like myself that do one-nighters in large cities. For that, this cab is perfect. If I needed more (and sometimes I do), I have bigger boxes!

While I understand that your explaining how it may be feasible it seems like it would be much easier to go out and buy a single cab solution to meet the louder gig needs if they exist for you.

+1 I've always been a 'right tool for the right job' type player... little cab that I like, big cab that I like! The cool thing is, this 'little cab' moved that dividing line up quite a bit, and I can use this in many more situations than most other small cabs I've had the pleasure or owning!
