AudioKinesis 1x12 Cab Part Two

Question for Ken- not sure if you covered this-

TC112 with a WW Ultra- any experience? Coming down to a choice between the TC112 and the Acme full range 12, heads are the fore-mentioned WW Ultra, and an RS750. This is for gigging around NYC using public transpo and walking, so the lightweight w/full range functionality is key. DB and electric.

My buddy Ric Vice has a Walter Woods (the first 'Ultra' spec... so just a smidge under the 1200 watts of the final version), and a Thunderchild.

It sounds FANTASTIC for for electric and DB. The Walters are not super fat down low, and quite frankly, I've never had huge luck with them with the original Acme's. I don't have a Walter any more, but my guess is, the Thunderchild would be the thing. Of course, you need to be a bit careful if you have one of the blue light Ultra's, but that combination will be super articulate, with enough real bottom to handle most gigs, and IMO good control over the bloom of a DB in some rooms.

Thunderchild all the way. The fact that it is smaller by quite a bit, and a bit lighter is a bonus for your situation.

IMO, neither the Acme nor the Thunderchild would be my first choice for the more attenuated and mid voiced TC heads. I was not impressed with my RH450 and the Thunderchild. I no longer had the RH450 by the time the Acme arrived, but every bone in my body says the Acme likes it wide, deep, and full.

Ok Fellas- you've never steered me wrong before- I am looking for the ultimate doubler box, so I'll just compare the two and see what I get.

I'll be driving each with my LMK (the old discontinued 2 channel one) which I think works well with both cabs.

Gracias!

I use the LMK as my doubler head with the thunder child 112 and works great. I also use it with my berg ae112 with very similar results, similar in that they are both great doubling cabs.

Just borrowed a TC112 from another Chicago bassist and I have to say- definitely the best cab for URB I've ever used- or heard.
It's OK for electric. Not great, but good. Of course it depends on what you are going for. I guess that makes it a great doubling cab.
I used it for a rehearsal Tuesday and a gig last night in a 200+ capacity room with a WW Ultra. Love it for upright. First cab where I've ever actually liked the sound of arco amplified. With electric bass I found having to boost mids somewhere in the 200-300 range and I just felt that I couldn't find the right boost frequency to really make it work.
That said, I'd recommend this cab and combo to anyone. But yes, I think that the 'Woods does have enough juice to blow this cab so watch out.

+1 to your description. That was always the issue I had with the Walter and a variety of cabs. PLENTY loud, amazingly articulate and pure for DB type applications or 'sparse mix' electric gigs, but lacking that low mid meat that really is needed if you are wumping a pop gig. That semi-parametric mid control on the Walter must have a pretty narrow Q, since I could never dial in that wide, punchy low mid thing. The 'magic' knob (that return volume knob or whatever it is called) helped a bit, adding for whatever reason, a bit more meat down low.

My feeling is that is more the Walter than the Thunderchild, since with, for example, the F500, it wumps with EB. Of course, when Ric Vice and I were testing out the cab, the F500 didn't sound ANYWHERE as good as the Walter with his DB, so I guess tradeoffs as always if you are a doubler.

Edit: That was also my primary concern with the Walter and the Acme FullRange, since that cab has even more low end extension, and an equally smooth 'no low midrange bump' sort of low end.

has anyone who has played this cab also played the new Baer cab with the 12 and 6 speakers?

I have a box sitting here in my office that says Baer on the side of it, so I should be able to do this fairly soon! :D

You guys are also tempting me to break out my WWU... :ninja:

That might be the one that is heading to me for review and clips after you are finished with it. I think Roger wasn't quite sure if he was going that route, or sending one direct from the factory. I assume he will let you know.

But what if I don't want to let it go...? :ninja:

I am picturing you at your law school interview, when asked why you want to be a lawyer, answering: "It'd be a great way to support my bass habit":p

LOL! You should have seen me in law school! That was not too far from the truth. I had hair down to my belt, and we were gigging about 3-4 nights per week while I was in law school. :bassist: :D

LOL indeed Tom.

Let's see, 1972 or there abouts, hair approaching the belt line, and rockin' Rickenbackers:

I was not in law school but lawyers had no problem buying McIntosh, Klipsch and JBL home stereos from a longhair.

Yeah, It's probably not an ideal match for Electric Bass. It work's fine for me with a Lakland 55-94 and my Mirecourt DB. I think that's possibly more about the Woods then it is the Thunderchild 112, but I'm so pleased with that combination that it's not really an issue and I don't slap and pop a great deal.

With my particular Double Bass pickup, the Ehrlund and it's matching pre amp the transition between arco and pizz is very seamless to start with, regardless of the amp. The Thunderchild 112 makes it just sound all that much better.

I have an older Ultra that's got a slightly RMS but I'm pretty careful. Frankly, I could never get the Double Bass up to the volume levels that could potentially damage the speaker. Since you mentioned it I'm going to be more observant of this possibility though. It's something I rarely ever think about.
